Synthetic crystals, by contrast, are created in laboratories to imitate the appearance of natural crystals. While they may look similar, they do not share the same geological origin or natural formation process.

What Is a Crystal?
From a mineralogical perspective, rock crystal (clear quartz) is the pure, transparent variety of quartz, a mineral composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system, exhibits a vitreous (glass-like) luster, and has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it both beautiful and durable.
In gemology, however, the term crystal is often used more broadly. It includes not only clear quartz but also naturally colored quartz varieties and quartz containing distinctive mineral inclusions.
The Broader Meaning of "Crystal"
In everyday English, the word crystal is used in several different ways.
It may refer to natural quartz, laboratory-grown crystals, decorative crystal glass, or even certain minerals commonly found in the gemstone market.
Within the world of gemstones and crystal collecting, the term is often used in its broader sense to include many naturally occurring stones beyond quartz, such as:
- Moonstone
- Garnet
- Rhodochrosite
- Malachite
- And many other natural gemstones
Although some of these minerals are not scientifically classified as quartz crystals, they have long been appreciated alongside crystals because of their natural beauty, symbolic meaning, and traditional cultural significance.

Today's market includes natural crystals that have been dyed, heat-treated, irradiated, or otherwise enhanced to improve their appearance.
Some of these treatments are widely accepted within the jewelry industry, while others are less valued by collectors who appreciate crystals in their most natural state.
For this reason, ETHERAO prioritizes carefully selected natural crystals whenever possible, allowing each stone's unique colors, textures, and characteristics to remain as close to nature as possible.
Crystals and Jade in Chinese Culture
In ancient China, crystals were closely associated with jade.
Clear quartz was once known as "Shui Jing" , meaning "the essence of water," and was also referred to as "Shui Yu" , or "water jade."
Classical Chinese literature often described jade not as a single mineral, but as any beautiful and precious stone. Under this broader cultural understanding, materials that we now classify separately—including crystal, agate, and certain gemstones—were all regarded as forms of jade because of their beauty and symbolic value.
This historical perspective reflects the deep appreciation ancient Chinese culture held for natural stones—not merely as decorative objects, but as enduring expressions of nature, craftsmanship, and harmony.
