The pine tree has been praised as an auspicious plant throughout Chinese history. Historical records tell that when Emperor Qin Shi Huang traveled to Mount Tai, a sudden storm forced him to take shelter beneath a large pine tree. He later bestowed the tree with the title “Five-Rank Official,” and it became known as the “Five-Rank Official Pine.”
Pine trees are traditionally associated with longevity and enduring vitality. Traditional Chinese birthday blessings often include the phrase, “May your fortune be as endless as the flowing waters of the Eastern Sea, and your longevity as enduring as the evergreen pine of Southern Mountain.”
In traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy, the “Three Friends of Winter” — pine, bamboo, and plum — are commonly depicted as symbols of auspiciousness. Motifs such as “Pine and Cypress in Spring” and “Pine and Chrysanthemum for Longevity” are also frequently found in paintings, calligraphy, utensils, and decorative art.
The pine tree is therefore widely regarded in traditional Chinese culture as an auspicious tree and may be planted around a residence.
