Executive Summary: The Star of Being Seen
Every twenty-year period in the Xuan Kong system has a ruling star, and the ruling star is not a decoration — it is the description of what the period rewards. Period 9, which runs from February 2024 to 2043, is governed by 九紫右弼 (Nine Purple Right Assistant), the star of fire, celebration, visibility, joy and the middle daughter. In the last period the reward went to accumulation; in this one it goes to being seen using what you have accumulated.
October 22, 2026 is a Cheng (成, Success) day — the ninth of the twelve Jianchu officers, the register of completion and ratification — and its chart is Ji Si (己巳): Yin Earth on the Snake, in the Wu Xu (戊戌) month of the Bing Wu (丙午) year, with Ji at its 帝旺 (Peak). In the annual chart of 2026, the center star is 一白 (One White, Tan Lang), which places the Nine Purple in the south-east and the Five Yellow in the south — a configuration that concentrates the period's opportunity in one sector and its principal hazard in another, three months before the year turns.
This Guide does three things. It explains what the Nine Purple star actually governs, and what "activation" means in operational terms. It works through the 2026 annual chart sector by sector, with cures for a month that is hot, dry and one day from Frost Descent. And it sets out a four-stage protocol for the Cheng day itself, because the tradition is unambiguous that a star is potential, not delivery.

What Period 9 Actually Changes
The Xuan Kong system divides time into periods of twenty years, each with a ruling number, a trigram and a set of associations. Period 8 (2004–2023) was governed by 八白 (Eight White) and the Gen trigram — mountain, stillness, accumulation. Its economic signature was property, infrastructure, storage and the appreciation of things that do not move. Period 9 is governed by 九紫 and the Li trigram — fire, the south, clarity, illumination.
Li has a distinctive structure that the tradition treats as its central teaching: the trigram is yang on the outside and yin in the middle — a hollow centre. Fire is bright and empty; it depends on fuel it does not contain. Read as a description of an economy, this is remarkably precise. Value in Period 9 accrues to things that are visible but not physical: software, media, reputation, intellectual property, energy, education, care. The visible surface is the product; the substance is elsewhere.
Three practical inferences follow, and they are the ones this Guide will apply. First, legibility beats inventory. A business with excellent work and no distribution is, in Period 9 terms, a fire with no air. Second, the south becomes important — the sector of Li, the sector of visibility — and its condition matters more than it did in Period 8. Third, every activating sector needs a corresponding resting sector, because fire without reserve burns out the occupants. The classical principle of 藏風聚氣 is not a counterweight to Period 9; it is the condition of surviving it.
One correction is necessary, because the market overstates it. Period 9 does not make everyone visible, and it does not reward publicity as such. It rewards coherence between what is shown and what is there. The period's characteristic failure is the opposite of obscurity: it is exposure of something hollow, which the Li trigram's empty centre describes exactly.
The Nine Purple Star
九紫右弼 is the ninth of the nine stars, associated with fire, the south, the heart, celebration, marriage, recognition and Joy. Its classical name, "Right Assistant," indicates its function: it assists the ruler. In Period 9 it is the ruler, which means its qualities are amplified across two decades rather than being a seasonal influence.
When the Nine Purple flies to a sector, the tradition expects that sector to become activated: more social traffic, more visibility, more celebration, and — importantly — more volatility. Fire is a fast star. It brings recognition quickly and removes it quickly, and it punishes neglect more visibly than the earth stars do.
The favourable associations are well known: celebrations, weddings, promotions, publicity, artistic work, and any activity that requires an audience. The unfavourable ones are equally classical: heart and eye complaints, insomnia, inflammation, and the specific kind of exhaustion that follows too much exposure. This is why the tradition treats the Nine Purple as a star to be managed rather than simply welcomed — activated where visibility is wanted, and cooled where rest is required.
The activation method is consistent across the classical texts. Fire is strengthened by red, orange, bright light, living flame, activity and sound. It is weakened by water and by hollow metal. The practical rule for a Period 9 home or office is therefore: activate the south-east with light and movement; keep the bedrooms cool, dark and quiet. A Nine Purple star activated in a bedroom produces exactly what its pathology describes — a bright, busy, sleepless room.
The 2026 Annual Chart
The annual star for 2026 is One White (一白貪狼) at the centre — the star of career, wisdom and distant water. The flight order from the centre runs north-west, west, north-east, south, north, south-west, east, south-east, which produces the following distribution.
South-east: Nine Purple. The period star in the sector of the period star's trigram — the strongest visibility placement of the year, and the sector this Guide treats as the year's principal opportunity. Activate deliberately, and use it for the work that needs an audience.
East: Eight White. The wealth star of the previous period, now in the east. Still favourable for accumulation, savings and the consolidation of assets. A good sector for the accounts, the safe, and the quiet work of building value.
Centre: One White. Career, wisdom, and the movement of water. The centre should be open and uncluttered in any year; in 2026 it should also be quiet, because One White is a star that rewards stillness rather than display.
North: Six White. Authority, mentors, and the favour of seniors. A good sector for a desk, a study, or the place where difficult correspondence is written.
North-east: Four Green. Study, examinations, romance and literary work. Favourable for writing, and for anyone preparing for an examination or a qualification.
South: Five Yellow. The year's principal hazard — the star of obstruction, illness and blockage, sitting in the sector of fire, in a fire month, in a fire year. This is the most important placement of 2026 and the one that most requires a cure.
North-west: Two Black. The illness star, in the sector of the patriarch and of metal. Requires a metal cure and should not be activated by renovation or noise.
West: Three Jade. The quarrel star, in the sector of metal — the classic configuration for disputes, litigation and domestic friction. Requires a fire cure (red) to control the wood, and the avoidance of sharp metal ornament.
South-west: Seven Red. The robbery star, in the sector of the matriarch and of earth. Associated with loss, violence and the specific risk of theft or betrayal. Requires water to drain the metal, and quiet.
The October Cures
October 2026 is a Wu Xu month in a Bing Wu year: two fire influences on an earth month, with the month branch Xu being the fire storehouse. The month is hot and dry, and it ends at Frost Descent on October 23 — the point at which the moisture in the air condenses and the season turns. The cures for this month are therefore cooling, moistening and settling, and they differ from the cures appropriate to spring.
South (Five Yellow): metal, not fire. The instinct in a fire month is to add fire to the fire sector; this is precisely wrong. Five Yellow is an earth star, and earth is controlled by metal: a brass or bronze object, a metal wind chime with six or eight rods, a heavy metal bowl. Do not place red in the south this month, do not light candles there, and do not renovate it. Keep the sector quiet, uncluttered and metal-heavy.
North-west (Two Black): metal. The illness star is also an earth star, and is also controlled by metal. A metal cure — a brass vessel, a copper coin set — plus dryness and quiet. Do not place water here, because water feeds the two-black earth's damp quality.
West (Three Jade): fire or red. Three Jade is wood, and wood is controlled by fire. A red object, a bright lamp, or a small red rug. Avoid metal in this sector, which would feed the wood's quarrelsome quality.
South-west (Seven Red): water. The robbery star is metal, and metal is drained by water. A small water feature, a dark blue or black object, or a bowl of water changed weekly. In October, with the chart this dry, the water cure serves double duty.
South-east (Nine Purple): light and movement. The year's opportunity sector. A lamp that is on in the evening, a moving object, red or orange accents, and — in October — a small plant to keep the fire from becoming scorching. Keep it clean, and use the room.
Everywhere: moisture. The month's real fault is dryness, and the cure is not a charm. Water in the air, water in the body, fewer stimulants, earlier nights. A humidifier in a heated room in late October is a feng shui cure with a measurable mechanism.
The Twelve Archetypes — October 22, 2026
🐒 Monkey — Six Harmony, Direct Wealth · The South-East
Shen (申) combines with Si and holds 庚, 壬 and 戊. The Monkey should occupy the south-east today: present, publish, announce. The star and the chart agree, which is rare.
🐓 Rooster — Half-Combination, Eating God · The Display
You (酉) holds 辛 and half-combines into metal. The Rooster's work is the display case — the finished object, well lit, correctly placed. Visibility is a design problem before it is a marketing one.
🐂 Ox — Half-Combination, Friend, Indirect Wealth · The East
Chou (丑) holds 己, 癸 and 辛. The Ox belongs in the east with the Eight White: the accounts, the store, the slow accumulation. Do not chase the spotlight today; consolidate.
🐍 Snake — Own Branch, Direct Resource · The Overheated Sector
Si holds 丙, 戊 and 庚 with Ji at peak. The Snake already carries fire. Keep the bedroom cool and dark tonight, and do not activate a Nine Purple star in a room where you need to sleep.
🐉 Dragon — Rob Wealth, Seven Killings, Indirect Wealth · The Water Cure
Chen (辰) holds 戊, 乙 and 癸 — the water storehouse. The Dragon supplies the month's missing element. Place water in the south-west, and drink more of it yourself.
🐇 Rabbit — Seven Killings · The Quiet Sector
Mao (卯) holds 乙 as Seven Killings with no combination. The Rabbit should avoid the west today, and avoid arguments in it. If a dispute must happen, hold it in the north.
🐅 Tiger — Direct Officer, Direct Resource · The Metal Cure
Yin (寅) holds 甲, 丙 and 戊 and forms 寅巳相害. The Tiger should place the metal cure in the south: a brass object, a six-rod chime, weight. Do not add fire to a Five Yellow sector.
🐎 Horse — Indirect Resource, Friend · The Double Fire
Wu (午) holds 丁 and 己 in a Bing Wu year. The Horse is the most fire-loaded sign on the most fire-loaded day. Sleep earlier, reduce screens after dark, and keep the south quiet.
🐑 Goat — Friend, Indirect Resource, Seven Killings · The Hearth
Wei (未) holds 己, 丁 and 乙. The Goat's sector is the south-west, where the Seven Red sits. Water there, and no valuables left in the open. Robbery stars are read literally as well as symbolically.
🐀 Rat — Indirect Wealth · The Centre
Zi (子) holds 癸 as Indirect Wealth, and One White sits at the centre in 2026. The Rat should keep the middle of the home open and quiet — no furniture blocking the through-line, no clutter at the crossing.
🐖 Pig — Direct Wealth, Direct Officer · The Clash
Hai (亥) clashes Si and holds 壬 and 甲. The Pig meets the day's disruption. Postpone renovation, avoid moving furniture across the centre, and keep the bedroom dark.
🐕 Dog — Rob Wealth, Eating God, Indirect Resource · The Storehouse
Xu (戌) is the month branch and the fire storehouse, holding 戊, 辛 and 丁. The Dog's work is containment: the store, the safe, the closed door. In a dry month, a sealed store is a protected one.
Ni Haixia's Reading: 藏風聚氣 as Building Science
The principle 藏風聚氣 is usually translated as "store the wind, gather the qi," and it is usually treated as poetry. In the reading associated with the Ni Haixia (倪海厦) school it is a statement about air, and it can be checked with an anemometer and a CO2 monitor.
The first half, store the wind, means that a dwelling should be shielded from wind at the height of the body — particularly at the neck and the small of the back, where convective loss is felt most. The classical objection to a bed placed directly beneath a window, or in line with a door, is an objection to draughts during sleep, and the modern complaint it predicts — waking with a stiff neck, a dry throat and a sense of having not slept — is exactly what convective loss produces.
The second half, gather the qi, means that air should not be stagnant. A sealed room accumulates carbon dioxide, moisture and volatile compounds; the tradition's insistence on ventilation at the start of the day, and on the opening of windows at the change of seasons, is a ventilation protocol expressed in the language of qi.
The school's residential advice resolves into four rules, all of which are engineering: sleep in still, clean air; live in moving air; keep the bedroom dark and the living room bright; and never let a room be both the place of work and the place of rest. The tradition's reasoning was cosmological and its conclusions were correct, which is the pattern that makes this material worth preserving rather than dismissing. This traditional perspective is offered for cultural and reflective interest, not as medical advice.
The 13% VAT Axis: Property, Renovation and the Period Turn
Period 9 has produced an unusual volume of renovation activity — the market's own reading of a change of period — and renovation is a VAT event with a structure that most owners underestimate. For a business, fit-out expenditure splits by rate: 13% on goods (materials bought directly, appliances, furniture), 9% on construction services, and 6% on design and consultancy. Each invoice must be classified correctly, and the input credit is available only where the invoice is compliant and the purchase supports taxable activity.
The timing issue is the one that matters. A renovation concentrates capital expenditure into a few months, creating a large 留抵 balance — excess input credit — before the revenue it is meant to support arrives. Under the incremental-credit refund (增值稅留抵退稅) mechanism, that balance can be recovered as cash, but only where the evidence chain is complete. For a property business, the allocation between commercial and residential use determines the recoverable proportion, and the documentation requirement is exact.
The Cheng-day framing is direct: a cure is only a cure if it is actually installed. The same is true of a tax credit — a recoverable balance that is never claimed is indistinguishable from a cost. Three disciplines, unchanged: document (contract, invoice, payment and delivery matched), cadence (monthly during the build, not annually), ring-fence (the recovered cash goes to the constraint, not to further renovation). Figures are illustrative. This is strategic framing, not financial or tax advice; engage a qualified accountant for any filing or transaction.
Crystal Resonance: The Period 9 Set
For a Cheng day in a fire period, ETHERAO works a set that is warm but anchored — the Period 9 palette with a corrective base.
- Citrine — quartz coloured by iron; the merchant's stone, placed in the south-east to activate.
- Clear Quartz — the reference lattice; used to keep an activated sector clear rather than merely bright.
- Amethyst — iron-coloured quartz; the stone of the quiet room, placed where sleep happens.
- Black Tourmaline — the boundary stone, placed at the entrance and in the north-west.
- Pyrite — cubic iron disulfide; for the east and the accounts, where weight is wanted.
- Smoky Quartz — irradiated quartz; the stone of completion, for the year's closing quarter.
One stone per sector, never a grid, and never a cure placed on a structural problem. Treat the practice as a ritual of intention — a marker of what a room is for — not as a substitute for ventilation, light or repair.
The Practice: A Four-Stage Activation Protocol
- Stage I — Read the Chart (07:00–08:00): With Clear Quartz. Walk the space and note the nine sectors. Identify the south-east (opportunity), the south (hazard) and the room where you sleep. Three notes, no more.
- Stage II — Cure the Hazard (09:00–11:00): With Black Tourmaline. Place metal in the south and in the north-west. Remove red from the south. Clear the sector of storage and clutter — this is the part that actually works.
- Stage III — Activate the Opportunity (13:00–15:00): With Citrine. Light the south-east, place one moving object, and use the room for the work that needs an audience. An unused activation is a decoration.
- Stage IV — Cool the Rest (Evening): With Amethyst. Dark, cool and quiet in the bedroom. In a fire period, the ability to stop is the rarest and most valuable practice there is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the Nine Purple star?
A: 九紫右弼, the ninth star, associated with fire, the south, celebration, recognition and joy. It rules Period 9 (2024–2043), which is why its qualities are amplified for two decades rather than for a season.
Q2: Where is the Nine Purple in 2026?
A: In the south-east. The 2026 annual centre star is One White, and the flight order places Nine Purple in the south-east and Five Yellow in the south.
Q3: Why is October 22 a Cheng day?
A: Cheng is the ninth Jianchu officer, the register of completion and ratification. The chart is Ji Si — Yin Earth on the Snake — with Ji at its 帝旺 peak, one day before Frost Descent.
Q4: How do you cure Five Yellow?
A: With metal, not fire. Five Yellow is an earth star, and earth is controlled by metal — a brass or bronze object, a six-rod chime, a heavy bowl. No red, no candles, no renovation in that sector.
Q5: Does the south really matter more in Period 9?
A: Yes, in the system's own logic: the south is the sector of Li, the trigram of the period. Its condition matters more than it did in Period 8, and it should be lit, uncluttered and free of heavy storage.
Q6: Which signs are strongest today?
A: The Monkey (six harmony with Si) for visibility work, the Rooster for presentation, and the Rat for the centre. The Pig faces a clash and should postpone renovation; the Horse and Snake should guard against overheating.
