Executive Summary: Visibility Is Not Receipt
Period 9 has been running since February 2024 and the market has settled on a single interpretation of it: be seen. That reading is not wrong, but it is only half the system, and the half it leaves out is the half that decides who is still standing in 2040.
The Nine Purple (九紫右弼) star governs the period: fire, the south, visibility, celebration, the middle daughter. Its gift is recognition and its characteristic failure is exposure of something hollow — the Li trigram is yang outside and yin within, a bright surface around an empty centre. Fire that is not fed by substance flares and goes out.
The star that completes it is Eight White (八白), the wealth star of the previous period, now in retirement and still the system's store. Eight White governs accumulation, savings, retained value, the granary. In Period 9 terms, the two stars form a cycle: Nine Purple produces attention, Eight White converts attention into something that survives the attention. One is income; the other is receipt. A business, a household or a career that activates only the first is running at a profit and retaining nothing.
October 23, 2026 is the day the system asks you to close that loop. It carries the Shou (收, Receiving) officer — gathering, collecting, storing — on a Geng Wu (庚午) chart in the Wu Xu month of the Bing Wu year, and it opens Frost Descent, the solar term in which the air's moisture becomes the earth's. The month's character changes on this day: October's heat has been dry heat, and what follows is dry cold. The cures change with it, and applying October's remedies in November is the most common error in the practice.

What Period 9 Actually Rewards
Period 8 (2004–2023) was governed by Eight White and the Gen trigram — mountain, stillness, accumulation. Its economic signature was property, infrastructure, storage, and the appreciation of things that do not move. People who owned during Period 8 did well by holding.
Period 9 (2024–2043) is governed by Nine Purple and Li — fire, the south, clarity, illumination. The Li trigram's structure is the period's central teaching: bright outside, hollow inside. Fire is visible and empty; it depends on fuel it does not contain.
Three inferences follow, and they are the ones this Guide will apply.
First, legibility beats inventory. Excellent work without distribution is a fire with no air. But — and this is the correction the market omits — legibility without retention is a fire with no fuel. The period's characteristic failure is not obscurity; it is the flash that consumed its own substance.
Second, the south matters more than it did. Li is the south, and in 2026 the south is doubly loaded: the year's 太歲 sits there (the year branch is 午, the Horse, whose direction is south), and the annual Five Yellow also flies there. That combination is the most important placement of the year.
Third, every activating sector needs a resting sector. Fire without reserve burns the occupants. The classical principle 藏風聚氣 is not a counterweight to Period 9; it is the condition of surviving it — which is why the Eight White sector matters as much as the Nine Purple one.
The Two Receiving Stars
It is worth being precise about what "receiving" means in the Xuan Kong system, because the vocabulary is loose in popular usage.
Nine Purple is the producing star in Period 9: it generates attention, invitation, audience and reputation. Its colour is red-purple, its element fire, its direction south, and its classical associations include celebration, marriage, promotion, publicity and artistic work. Its pathologies are equally classical: heart and eye complaints, insomnia, inflammation, and the exhaustion that follows too much exposure.
Eight White is the retaining star: wealth, savings, accumulation, the store. Its element is earth, its direction north-east in the original Lo Shu, and its character is slow, dense and quiet. It does not produce anything. It keeps what has been produced — which is why a period that demotes it produces so many visible businesses with no reserves.
The receiving potential of Period 9 is therefore the conversion between them: what Nine Purple makes visible, Eight White must make permanent. Everything in this Guide's practical section is an application of that sentence: activate the south-east for visibility, place the store in the east for retention, and never let the two be the same room.
The 2026 Chart, Sector by Sector
The annual star for 2026 is One White (一白貪狼) at the centre — career, wisdom, distant water. The flight order from the centre produces the following distribution.
South-east — Nine Purple. The period star in its own trigram: the year's strongest visibility placement. Activate with light, warmth, movement, celebration. Use it for the work that needs an audience. Keep it out of bedrooms.
East — Eight White. The store. The best sector of 2026 for accumulation: savings, accounts, the safe, the pantry shelf, the archive. Quiet, heavy, closed. This is the receiving sector and it should be the least decorative room in the house.
Centre — One White. Career and wisdom. The centre should be open and uncluttered in any year; in 2026 it should also be quiet, because One White rewards stillness rather than display.
North — Six White. Authority, mentors, the favour of seniors. A good sector for a desk and for difficult correspondence. Note that the north is also the 歲破 direction in 2026 — see below.
North-east — Four Green. Study, examinations, romance, literary work. Favourable for writing and for anyone preparing for a qualification.
South — Five Yellow, plus 太歲. The year's principal hazard, in the sector of fire, in a fire month, in a fire year, on the year's own branch. This is the most important placement of 2026 and the one that most requires a cure — and the one that must not be disturbed.
North-west — Two Black. The illness star, in the sector of the patriarch and of metal. Metal cure; no renovation, no noise.
West — Three Jade. The quarrel star, in the sector of metal. Fire cure (red) to control the wood; avoid sharp metal ornament and litigation in this sector.
South-west — Seven Red. Robbery, in the sector of the matriarch and of earth. Water to drain the metal; quiet; check the locks.
太歲 and 歲破: The Two Directions Not to Disturb
Two rules are older than the Xuan Kong system and are still observed because they are structurally sound.
太歲 (Tai Sui) is the year's own branch direction. In 2026 the year is Bing Wu, so the branch is 午 (Wu) — the Horse — and the Tai Sui sits in the south. The classical instruction is not to disturb it: no digging, no demolition, no major construction, no drilling into that wall. The reasoning is that the year's qi is concentrated there and disruption produces instability out of proportion to the work.
歲破 (Sui Po) is the directly opposite direction, the branch that clashes with the year. For Wu it is 子 (Zi), the Rat — the north. The same prohibition applies, and the two together mean that in 2026 the two cardinal north–south axis points should be left alone. Renovate east–west instead; if work in the south is unavoidable, schedule it outside the Wu month and keep it minimal.
Note how this compounds in 2026. The south carries Tai Sui and Five Yellow and, in the Frost Descent month, a seasonal fire influence. Three independent systems say the same thing about one sector. In the practice, when systems agree, the instruction is not symbolic: keep the south quiet, keep it metal, keep it clear of heat.
The Frost Descent Cures
October 2026 has been a Wu Xu month in a Bing Wu year — two fire influences on an earth month, with Xu the fire storehouse. The month has been hot and dry. Frost Descent changes the character without changing the element: the air remains dry, but the temperature turns. What follows is dry cold, and the cures must shift accordingly. This is the point at which a practitioner who keeps applying October's cooling remedies makes the space worse.
South (Five Yellow, Tai Sui): metal, still, and untouched. Five Yellow is an earth star and earth is controlled by metal: a brass or bronze object, a six- or eight-rod metal wind chime, a heavy metal bowl. Do not add red, do not light candles, do not renovate. In the cold months, do not place a heater in this sector either — Five Yellow plus a heat source in a fire month is the configuration the tradition associates with inflammation and sleeplessness.
North-west (Two Black, 歲破): metal, quiet, and no water feature. Six coins or a metal gourd; no renovation, no drilling, no water. Note that the north is also the Sui Po direction, so the sector is doubly protected and doubly sensitive.
West (Three Jade): fire, small and contained. A red object, a warm light — but not a candle flame in a dry month. Three Jade is wood in a metal sector; fire drains the wood without feeding the quarrel.
South-west (Seven Red): water, in a closed vessel. Seven Red is metal and requires water to drain it — but in a frost month an open water feature is a cold, damp problem rather than a cure. Use a sealed glass vessel, or a dark blue textile. This is the specific seasonal adjustment: water in winter should be contained, not circulating.
North-east (Four Green): wood and light. A plant, a lamp, a bookshelf. The study sector should be the warmest corner of a cold house, because it is where the year's mental work continues after the harvest.
East (Eight White): earth and weight. The receiving sector wants mass: stone, ceramic, a heavy bowl, the safe. Nothing bright, nothing moving, no mirror. What is stored here should be counted and recorded.
South-east (Nine Purple): light and warmth, maintained. The year's opportunity sector should be the one place in the house that is deliberately kept bright through the dark months. In a Period 9 reading this is not decoration; it is the sector where the period's own energy is sustained.
Where the Receiving Goes
The practical question most households actually have is: where do I put the things I want to keep? The answer in 2026 is the east, and the discipline is worth stating precisely.
The east sector of the home — or of the principal room, if the home is a single space — should hold the household's store: the documents, the accounts, the savings records, the pantry overflow, the archive. It should be closed (a cupboard, a chest, a box), heavy (wood, ceramic, stone), counted (a list inside the door), and quiet (no device, no screen, no speaker).
Three common errors are worth naming. Putting the store in the south-east, where it competes with the year's visibility function and is constantly disturbed. Putting it in the north, which is the Sui Po direction in 2026 and which is also the sector of movement rather than retention. Putting it on display — a glass cabinet in a hallway — which converts a store into a statement, and a statement is spent.
And one addition specific to this day. The Na Yin of Geng Wu is Lu Pang Tu (路旁土), roadside earth: compacted ground that bears weight. The image suggests the correct quality for the receiving sector — not richness, but firmness. A store should feel like a floor, not like a treasury.
The Day: The Instrument Being Cleaned
Geng (庚) is Yang Metal — the blade, the frame, the precise instrument. Wu (午) is noon fire, holding 丁 (Direct Officer) and 己 (Direct Resource): authority and support in one branch. Geng sits in 沐浴 (Bathing), the stage of washing rather than swinging. The year's branch duplicates the day's — 午午自刑 — and the officer is Shou.
Read as a feng shui instruction, the chart says four things.
Survey, do not renovate. 沐浴 is cleaning; Shou is gathering. Neither is construction, and the south is unavailable for construction in any case. Today is for finding the cold surface, the blocked door, the full cupboard, the dead corner.
Move metal, not fire. Geng is metal and the year's hazard sector requires a metal cure. Today is the correct day to place the brass bowl, the metal chime, the six coins — quiet objects, correctly sited.
Do not reorganise twice. 午午自刑 is heat turned inward: the second pass, the third rearrangement, the shelf that is never finished. Decide the layout on paper and execute it once.
Seal the north. Frost Descent is when the cold enters from the direction of the year's clash. Weather-strip the northern door, close the northern window at dusk, and keep the north sector free of water and clutter. This is 藏風 performed literally, and it is the single most effective thing most homes can do this week.
Ni Haixia's Reading: The House and the Body Share a Winter
The classical medicine of the Ni Haixia (倪海厦) lineage treats the cold months with one governing character: 藏 — store, conceal, keep within. The 黃帝內經's instruction is behavioural before it is herbal: retire early, rise late, wait for the light, keep the will quiet, do not let the skin leak.
Three correspondences between the building and the body are worth stating, because they make the same recommendations twice.
The Kidney stores the reserve (腎藏精), and its yang aspect is the fire that keeps water moving. In a house, that is the heating system and the thermal mass: the thing that prevents a cold room from becoming a damp one. In a body, it is 命門 — and its failure looks the same in both cases, as pooling rather than circulation.
Wind enters at the gates. 風池 and 風府 at the nape, 大椎 at the upper back, 命門 at the lower back, 湧泉 at the soles. These are thermal bridges: the places where the envelope is thin. A scarf, a covered lower back and warm feet are the body's weather-stripping, and the traditional advice to protect them at Frost Descent is the same advice as sealing a northern door.
Fear contracts the surface (恐傷腎). A contracted surface cannot receive — which is the psychological version of a sealed house with the vents closed. The tradition's remedy is warmth applied slowly: warm food, warm rooms, warm company. This is cultural and reflective material, not medical advice.
The 13% VAT Axis: Receiving What the Year Owes
For a business, the receiving star has a balance-sheet expression, and it is the same expression this Guide has used for the house. 13% VAT produces two flows and a reservoir: output tax on sales, input tax on purchases, and a balance that either moves or pools.
When purchases lead sales — a Q4 build, equipment, a slow quarter — the reservoir becomes an excess input credit (留抵稅額): the company's own money, already spent, held where it earns nothing. It is the financial equivalent of a store that is full and never opened.
The incremental-credit refund (留抵退稅) mechanism is the act of opening it, and the three disciplines that make the claim survive are the three this Guide has recommended for the sector work.
Site it correctly. Reconcile before filing: goods, invoices and descriptions aligned. A refund file is an evidence exercise, and mismatches are what fail.
Time it to the stable window. Between the last stocking run and the year-end cut-off, the credit balance stops moving. That is the window; a claim during a stock build is a claim built on a moving base.
Route it to the constraint. Recovered credit is working capital, not profit. Put it where throughput is limited — the inventory that turns, the equipment that removes a bottleneck — never into operating expense, where it disappears without a decision.
And the Period 9 point, which is the article's whole argument in financial form. Visibility without retention is a fire with no fuel. A company that generates attention and cannot convert it into cash, records and reserves is not growing; it is burning. The refund, the collection, the reconciliation and the sealed store are the Eight White work that makes the Nine Purple work worth doing. Figures are illustrative. This is strategic framing, not financial or tax advice; engage a qualified accountant for any filing or transaction.
Crystal Resonance: Sector by Sector
- South-east (Nine Purple): clear quartz or citrine — light, transmission, the visible sector.
- East (Eight White): smoky quartz, hematite or a heavy ceramic bowl — mass, retention, the store.
- South (Five Yellow): brass, bronze or a metal chime. No stone; the cure here is metal, and it should be quiet.
- North-west (Two Black): pyrite or a metal gourd; no water, no crystal point aimed into the room.
- West (Three Jade): a small red object rather than a stone — fire controls the wood.
- South-west (Seven Red): a sealed dark vessel; obsidian if a stone is wanted, never an open water feature in frost.
The rule is one object per sector, placed once, left alone. A house with a stone in every corner is a house with no clear instruction. Treat the practice as ritual and let the building science do the physical work.
The Practice: A Nine-Step Audit for October 23
- Locate the centre. Find the middle of the plan. It should be open, uncluttered and quiet. Clear it first; everything else follows from the centre.
- Find the south. Confirm nothing is being renovated, drilled or heated there. Place the metal cure if it is missing.
- Find the east. This is the store. Clear it, close it, count what is in it, and write the list inside the door.
- Check the south-east. Is it lit? Is it used? A dark opportunity sector is the year's most expensive dead space.
- Seal the north. Draught strips, closed windows at dusk, no water feature, no clutter against the north wall.
- Walk the envelope with the back of your hand. Every surface colder than the air is a thermal bridge, and every thermal bridge is where the frost will appear inside.
- Warm one room completely. One room that is genuinely warm and genuinely used beats a lukewarm whole house.
- Write the record. What was moved, what was cured, what was sealed, and the date. Feng shui without a record is a series of opinions.
- Stop. The doubled branch makes the second pass irresistible. Resist it. What is done once and left alone is what takes effect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the "receiving star" in Period 9?
A: Not a single star but a conversion. Nine Purple produces attention; Eight White retains it. The receiving potential of the period is the link between them — visibility that becomes something permanent rather than a flash that consumes its fuel.
Q2: Why is the south so important in 2026?
A: Because three systems agree. The year branch Wu makes the south the Tai Sui direction, the annual Five Yellow flies there, and the month carries fire into a fire sector. The instruction is to keep it quiet, metal and free of heat.
Q3: What are Tai Sui and Sui Po?
A: The year's own branch direction (Tai Sui) and its direct opposite (Sui Po). In 2026 they are south and north respectively. Neither should be disturbed by digging, demolition or major construction.
Q4: How do the cures change at Frost Descent?
A: The element does not change but the temperature does: dry heat becomes dry cold. Cooling remedies stop working and containment begins — water in sealed vessels rather than open features, warmth rather than ventilation, mass rather than movement.
Q5: Where should the household store go?
A: The east in 2026, where Eight White sits. Closed, heavy, quiet and counted. Not the south-east (which is for visibility), not the north (Sui Po), and never on display.
Q6: What is the single most effective action today?
A: Seal the north and clear the centre. One stops the loss; the other restores the distribution. Everything else in the audit is refinement.
