Executive Summary: The Year's Star Is the Period's Future
Period 9 began in February 2024 and will run until 2043. Its ruling star is Nine Purple (九紫右弼) — fire, the south, visibility, recognition — and the market has organised itself around a single reading of that fact: be seen.
That reading is not wrong. It is incomplete in a way that becomes expensive around the fifth or sixth year of a period, when the visibility has been bought and the question turns to what was kept.
The star that answers the question is One White (一白貪狼). In Period 9, One White is not a minor star. It is the 未來生氣 — the future prosperity star, the star whose period has not yet arrived and whose influence is therefore generative rather than triumphant. Classical Xuan Kong assigns each star a status: 旺 (prosperous), 生 (generating), 退 (retiring), 死 (dead), 煞 (killing). Nine Purple is 旺. One White is 生. The distinction matters enormously, because a 生 star works like a seed and a 旺 star works like a lamp.
Here is the fact that makes 2026 unusual and that almost nobody has priced. The 2026 annual star is One White, and it sits at the centre of the chart. The future prosperity star is not on the perimeter where it could be activated by a door; it is in the middle of the building, in the position that governs the whole. A year with the 生 star at the centre is a seed year: the energy is present but not yet circulating, available to be stored but not yet available to be spent.
October 24, 2026 is the day the year's register opens that store. It is Xin Wei (辛未) — Yin Metal on the Goat — carrying the Kai (開, Opening) officer, on the second day of Frost Descent (霜降), with the Na Yin Roadside Earth (路旁土). Its month is Wu Xu (戊戌) and its year Bing Wu (丙午); the chart contains fire and earth and a single dry metal stem, and no water at all.
This Guide sets out the opening dynamics of Period 9, the full sector analysis for the year, and the November outlook, which divides into two distinct regimes on the ninth of the month.

The Day's Signature: Fine Metal on a Dry Storehouse
辛 (Xin) is Yin Metal: the burin, the ring, the measuring rule. In the body correspondence of the tradition it governs the Lung (肺), the 相傅之官 — the minister who regulates. Its classical function is 治節, the setting of limits and the maintenance of rhythm. A metal stem on an opening day is a reminder that an aperture without a rule is a hole.
未 (Wei) is yin earth and the wood storehouse (木庫): 己 earth, 丁 fire, 乙 wood. In the body correspondence it is the Small Intestine (小腸), the 受盛之官 — the official of receiving and containing, whose function is 化物, the transformation of what has been received, and whose defining operation is to separate the clear from the turbid.
That pairing is the day's central image and, as this Guide will argue, the central operation of feng shui itself. 辛 gives the rule; 未 gives the separation. A house, like a body, is healthy when the clear rises and the turbid descends, and sick when the two are confused.
The chart's relations refine the instruction. The year branch 午 (Horse) harmonises with the day branch 未 (Goat) — 午未合, transforming toward earth — so the day is supported from the year. The month branch 戌 (Dog) forms 未戌相刑 with the day: the earth punishment, friction between two dry soils. Its signature is delay in matters of land, title, contract and trust, and its location is the southwest quadrant, which is where both 未 and 戌 sit on the Lo Shu. On a day carrying this punishment, do not break ground in the southwest and do not sign the lease.
Finally the Na Yin, 路旁土: roadside earth, the compacted strip beside a thoroughfare. In the Na Yin cycle it is the humblest earth — barren, walked on, reliable under load — and the only one whose value comes entirely from traffic. For a Guide about opening, it supplies the criterion. An aperture is valuable in proportion to what crosses it, not to what it contains.
Opening Star Dynamics: The Five Statuses
Before any chart can be read, the reader has to know what each star is for in this period, because a star's meaning is entirely a function of its status.
旺 — Prosperous. Nine Purple. The period star, at full strength for twenty years. Its element is fire; its trigram is Li, yang outside and yin within — a bright surface around an empty centre. Its gift is recognition; its characteristic failure is the exposure of something hollow. Fire that is not fed by substance flares and goes out, and the flare is more visible than the going-out.
生 — Generating. One White. The next period's star, and therefore the star of the future. Its element is water; its trigram is Kan, yin outside and yang within — a dark surface around a full centre. It governs intelligence, communication, flow, and the kind of value that accumulates quietly. In Period 9 the 生 star is where seed capital sits, in every sense of the phrase: it is not yet earning, and it is the only thing that will be earning in 2044.
退 — Retiring. Eight White. The previous period's wealth star, out of office and not yet weak. The tradition's phrase is 退而不敗 — retired but not defeated. Eight White still governs accumulation, savings, retained value, the granary, and it remains the most reliable star for anything that must be kept. Its element is earth; its trigram is Gen, the mountain, stillness.
死 — Dead. Seven Red. The star of Period 7, fully spent. Its element is metal; its trigram is Dui, the mouth, speech, pleasure. A dead star is not dangerous so much as inert — it does not generate, it consumes. In practice Seven Red governs talking about value rather than creating it, which makes it the natural star of publicity that produces no sales.
煞 — Killing. Six White, Five Yellow, Four Green, Three Jade, Two Black. These are not uniformly harmful, and the tradition's habit of treating them as a single class is one of the reasons popular feng shui is so unreliable. Five Yellow (五黃廉貞) is the most severe, the 正煞, associated with obstruction and accident. Two Black (二黑巨門) is the illness star, 病符. Three Jade (三碧祿存) is quarrel and litigation. Four Green (四綠文曲) is the mildest of the group and remains usable for study, writing and examinations, which is why the 文昌 configuration survives into Period 9 despite the star being out of status. Six White (六白武曲) retains authority and is frequently constructive where metal is needed as a remedy.
The practical upshot: in Period 9 there are exactly three stars worth building around — 9, 1 and 8 — and one worth using as a tool, which is 6. Everything else is either managed or ignored.
What "Opening" Means in a Chart
The word 開 has a technical meaning in Xuan Kong that is worth stating, because it governs where a door can go and therefore where the year's energy can enter.
A building's qi enters through the 氣口 (qì kǒu) — the mouth of qi — which is normally the door, and occasionally a large window or an exposed balcony. The facing direction (向) determines the chart; the door determines whether the chart can be used. A perfectly favourable facing with a door in the wrong palace is a fine instrument with no player.
The classical rule for the gate is the 城門訣 (gate star method). In outline: the gate must be in a palace adjacent to the facing palace — the left or right flank — and that palace must contain either the period's 旺 star (9) or its 生 star (1). If both conditions hold, the gate can be opened there and the chart receives the period's energy through a side entrance. If neither holds, the door is merely a way for people to walk in.
Two consequences for 2026 specifically.
First, the 生 star is not on the perimeter. With One White at the centre of the annual chart, the year's generative energy sits in the middle of the plan rather than at any facade. This is why 2026 behaves like a seed year: the energy is real, it is central, and it is not directly reachable from outside. What reaches the perimeter is the year's secondary pattern, which is dominated by the South — where Five Yellow and the 太歲 coincide — and by the North, where the 歲破 and the 三煞 sit.
Second, the gate that does work is in the southeast. Nine Purple occupies the southeast in the 2026 annual chart, and the southeast is adjacent to the south (the facing palace of the year's pressure) and to the east. A southeast entry, or a southeast opening within the plan, is the one aperture through which the period star can be reached in 2026. It carries a caution, addressed in the sector analysis: the southeast also holds the 病符 direction for a 午 year, so the gate is open and the health of those who use it must be watched.
The 2026 Annual Chart: One White at the Centre
The Bing Wu year flies One White to the centre. The resulting distribution is:
|
Southeast 9 Purple |
South 5 Yellow |
Southwest 7 Red |
|
East 8 White |
Centre 1 White |
West 3 Jade |
|
Northeast 4 Green |
North 6 White |
Northwest 2 Black |
Read as a whole, the chart has three features worth naming.
One Yellow and the 太歲 occupy the south. The year's branch is 午, which is due south, so the 太歲 (Year God) sits in the south — and so does Five Yellow, the most severe of the killing stars. This coincidence is the defining hazard of 2026. The south is at once the most authoritative direction in the building and the most obstructed, and the combination produces the classic pattern: a year in which decisions made in the seat of authority are unusually prone to being blocked by circumstance rather than by opposition.
Two Black sits in the northwest. The illness star in the Qian palace — the sector of the father, the principal, the head of the household, and in a commercial plan the sector of the person in charge. This is a health placement rather than a financial one, and it is the reason 2026's most common remedy is metal.
Nine Purple sits in the southeast. The period star in the palace of 巽, the wind, the eldest daughter, the gradual and penetrating influence. In Period 9 this is the year's most useful position: the visibility star in the sector of steady, incremental reach. It is where a business should put its outward-facing activity — the marketing desk, the showroom, the publishing function — with the health caveat noted above.
November's Two Regimes
November 2026 divides at the ninth, and applying one month's remedies across the whole month is the most common error in the practice.
The month stars follow the year's stem-branch. For a 午 year the first lunar month flies Eight White to the centre, and the sequence descends by one each month. Working forward: the ninth lunar month carries Nine Purple at the centre, and the tenth carries Eight White.
Regime I — 1 to 8 November: Nine Purple at the centre. The period star returns to the governing position for eight days. This is a brief, high-visibility window: announcements, launches and public positioning made in this period carry further than at any other time in the month, because the whole chart is temporarily organised around the visibility star. It is also, for the same reason, a period of exposure — anything hollow is more visible than usual.
Regime II — 9 to 30 November: Eight White at the centre. The retiring wealth star takes the centre for the remainder of the month, and the character of November changes completely. Eight White is the granary, and a month governed by it is a month for collection rather than promotion: invoicing, reconciliation, renewals, the closing of what was opened in October. The transition on the ninth is the month's real hinge, and it coincides roughly with 立冬 (Start of Winter) on 7 November — the door closing on the counting house.
Two solar terms bracket the month. 立冬 on 7 November ends Frost Descent and begins the winter; its three pentads are 水始冰 (water begins to freeze), 地始凍 (the ground begins to freeze) and 雉入大水為蜃 (the pheasant enters the great water and becomes a clam). 小雪 on 22 November begins the light snow, whose pentads are 虹藏不見 (the rainbow hides and is not seen), 天氣上升地氣下降 (heaven's qi rises and earth's qi descends) and 閉塞而成冬 (blockage completes the winter).
That middle pentad is the whole November instruction, and it is not poetry. 天氣上升地氣下降 — heaven's qi ascends and earth's qi descends — is a description of separation: the two qi stop communicating. In a building this is the condition the tradition calls 氣散, qi scattering: the space is neither well-ventilated nor well-grounded, and everything in it feels slightly unresolved. The remedy is the same one the body uses, and the day's chart names it — separate deliberately, then reconnect at one point. One open window, one grounding element, and a clear distinction between the spaces for activity and the spaces for rest. Not everything open; one aperture, properly placed.
The Full Sector Analysis for November
The table below combines the 2026 annual stars with the two monthly regimes. The 煞 column names the traditional combination where one exists.
| Sector | Annual | Nov 1–8 | Nov 9–30 | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South | 5 | 4 | 3 | Five Yellow with the 太歲; wood feeds the fire all month |
| Southwest | 7 | 5 | 6 | 交劍煞 in the first week; sharp metal on sharp metal |
| West | 3 | 2 | 1 | 鬥牛煞 early; relieved after the ninth when One White arrives |
| Northwest | 2 | 1 | 9 | Illness star fired by Nine Purple in the second half |
| North | 6 | 5 | 4 | 歲破 and 三煞; Five Yellow, drained by the annual Six |
| Northeast | 4 | 3 | 2 | Study star then illness star; useful early, quiet late |
| East | 8 | 7 | 6 | Wealth generating metal; productive but leaking all month |
| Southeast | 9 | 6 | 7 | Fire attacking metal; the year's gate, with the 病符 caution |
| Centre | 1 | 9 | 8 | 1–9 fame in the first week, 1–8 collection thereafter |
South — Five Yellow with the 太歲. The most pressured sector of the year, and November makes it worse rather than better: Four Green in the first week and Three Jade in the second are both wood, and wood feeds fire, which feeds the earth of Five Yellow. The fix is metal, and specifically metal that hangs and sounds — a six-rod wind chime, a brass bell, a bowl of coins — placed to drain the earth. Do not place red, do not light candles, do not renovate, and do not put the year's most important meeting in this corner. Silence is the cure; noise in the south in 2026 is the disease.
Southwest — the crossed swords. Seven Red with Five Yellow in the first week is 交劍煞, the crossed-swords configuration: two metal-edged stars in a dry earth palace, and on a chart whose month is 戊戌, another dry earth. It governs disputes that escalate, correspondence that turns hostile, and — in a commercial reading — negotiations that harden into positions. After the ninth the Six White arrives and the pattern relaxes into something workable. The cure is water: a dark vessel, a still bowl, anything that gives the metal somewhere to go. And the practical instruction, given 未戌相刑 and the fact that the southwest is the seat of both branches, is blunt: do not conduct the difficult conversation in the southwest this month.
West — the bulls, then relief. Three Jade with Two Black is 鬥牛煞, the bull fight: quarrelling, petty litigation, the argument that costs more than the thing argued about. It is a weak configuration rather than a dangerous one, and it lifts on the ninth when One White arrives — water generating wood, the quarrel losing its grip. Manage the first eight days by keeping the west quiet and refusing to escalate; do not install a remedy for a problem that is scheduled to end.
Northwest — the illness star fired. Two Black sits in Qian all year, in the sector of the principal. In the first week One White arrives and moderates it — water and earth in a workable relation. In the second half Nine Purple arrives, and fire generates earth: the illness star is strengthened precisely when the rest of the month turns conservative. This is the month's most counter-intuitive reading. A sector can be at its most vulnerable in the most favourable half of the month, because the arriving star feeds the resident one. The cure is metal — six coins, a white metal object, a brass vessel — and the behavioural instruction is to protect the health of the person in charge in the second half of November, not the first.
North — Five Yellow on the 歲破. The north holds the 歲破 (the branch opposite the 太歲) and, for a 午 year, the 三煞 — the three killings, which for a fire-frame year fall on 亥, 子 and 丑, all in the northern quadrant. In the first week Five Yellow arrives on top of that. It sounds catastrophic and it is not, because of a detail the tradition is careful about: the annual Six White is metal, and earth generates metal. The Five Yellow is drained by generating the Six. The north is therefore the one sector where the year's own configuration supplies the remedy for the month's affliction — provided the metal is actually there. Keep the north quiet, keep it metallic, do no work on it, and let the drain do its job.
Northeast — study, then illness. Four Green with Three Jade in the first week is a wood-on-wood configuration, mildly quarrelsome and excellent for study, writing, examinations and any work that requires sustained attention. In the second half Two Black arrives and wood attacks earth: the illness star again, in the sector of the youngest son and of the mountain. This is a good month to do intellectual work in the northeast in the first week, and a poor one to sleep there in the last three.
East — productive and leaking. Eight White in the east all year, with Seven Red and then Six White arriving — earth generating metal in both halves. The east produces all month: it is the best sector in the building for manufacturing, delivery, output and any activity measured in units. It also leaks, because the wealth star is spending its substance to generate metal rather than storing it. The correction is a vessel of still water in the east — not a fountain, a still one — to hold what is generated. Without it, the east is a quarter that ships a great deal and retains little.
Southeast — the gate and its caution. Nine Purple with Six White and then Seven Red: fire attacking metal in both halves, which is the year's clearest instance of the period star in conflict with the element it is burning. The southeast is still the year's gate — it is where the 9 can be reached — and it is also the 病符 direction for a 午 year. The reading is exact and it is the most useful line in this analysis: the southeast is where 2026's opportunity enters, and it is also where the cost of pursuing it is paid. The cure is water as mediator — blue, black, glass, a still surface — because water conducts between fire and metal and prevents the clash. Put the outward-facing work here; put nothing here that requires rest.
Centre — from fame to collection. One White at the centre for the year; Nine Purple arrives for eight days and Eight White for the rest. The 1–9 pairing is the classical fame configuration, and it is why the first week of November is the month's window for anything public. The 1–8 pairing that follows is earth over water — the wealth star sitting on the generative star — which is the configuration of a granary built over a well: the year's seed is covered by the year's harvest, and the correct activity is to store, not to announce.
The Three Prohibitions
Directional prohibitions in 2026 are unusually concentrated, and all three of them point at the north-south axis.
太歲 in the south (午). The Year God's palace is not to be disturbed. No excavation, no demolition, no drilling, no heavy furniture moved in, and — in the traditional reading — no attempt to "fix" the sector with a remedy that involves work. The Five Yellow already there makes the point structurally: the south is where the year's obstruction lives, and the correct response to obstruction is stillness, not intervention.
歲破 in the north (子). The branch opposite the 太歲, and the direction of maximum tension in the year. The classical instruction is identical to the 太歲's and slightly more urgent, because the 歲破 is where things break. This is why the north's Five Yellow is best handled by an object already in place rather than by any new work.
三煞 in the north (亥子丑). For a 寅午戌 fire-frame year, the three killings fall on the three water branches, all north. The rule is that the 三煞 direction must not be faced during construction, and that no ground should be broken there. Since the 歲破 is in the same quadrant, 2026's northern prohibition is effectively doubled.
The single practical instruction that follows from all three: if any renovation is planned for the fourth quarter, the north and south are unavailable. The east and southeast are open. The southwest is available after the ninth of November and not before. And the west is available but will not reward the effort.
分清別濁: The Ni Haixia Reading of a House
The Ni Haixia (倪海厦) lineage reads the body through the same logic it applies to a landscape, and the classical phrase that connects the two is 分清別濁 — separate the clear from the turbid. In the body it is the function of the Small Intestine, the 受盛之官, which receives what the stomach has cooked and divides it: the clear is sent up to be transformed, the turbid is sent down to be expelled. When the separation fails, the result is not deficiency but confusion — undigested material entering the wrong channel, and symptoms that appear in one place while the cause sits in another.
The 辛 Wei day pairs that official with the Lung, the 相傅之官, whose function is 治節 — regulation, the setting of limits, the maintenance of rhythm. Lung governs the descent of qi; Small Intestine governs the separation of what descends. Together they describe a single system: the rule, and the division it makes.
The architectural reading is not an analogy. A building with the door in the wrong place, the kitchen open to the bedroom, the bathroom opening onto the dining table, and no distinction between the space for activity and the space for rest is a building with 清濁不分 — clear and turbid mixed. Its symptoms are exactly the ones a practitioner of the tradition would predict: sleep that does not restore, work that does not conclude, a household in which everything is slightly unresolved. No amount of ornament corrects it, because the fault is in the plan rather than the decoration.
The correction follows the same three steps the medicine follows. Separate: a physical division between the active and the resting zones, even a screen. Route: a clear path from entry to the place where decisions are made, without passing through the place where people sleep. Release: a working exhaust — a window that opens, a fan that extracts — because a space that cannot expel what it has received will confuse clear with turbid no matter how it is arranged.
This traditional perspective is offered for cultural and reflective interest, not as medical advice; diagnosis and treatment belong with a qualified clinician.
The 13% VAT Axis: Three Rates for One Cure
Feng shui remedies are inexpensive objects and expensive projects, and the tax treatment follows the form rather than the intention. This is where a practice that is usually discussed in the language of cosmology meets a column in a spreadsheet — and the spreadsheet is frequently the more decisive of the two.
Three rates apply, and the distinction between them is form, not purpose.
6% — modern services. Advice, audit, consultation, a written assessment, a remote reading. Where the deliverable is analysis, the supply is a service at 6%. This is the cleanest structure for a practitioner and the least expensive for a client, and it is why the written report is worth more than its content suggests: it fixes the form of the supply.
9% — construction and installation services. Where the engagement includes fitting, mounting, building or alteration, the supply becomes a construction service at 9%. The moment a remedy is installed rather than specified, the rate changes, and a proposal that bundles advice with installation at a single price has converted a 6% analysis into a 9% works contract.
13% — goods. Where the remedy is sold as an object — a crystal, a screen, a water feature delivered as merchandise — the rate is 13%. And a 混合銷售 (mixed sale) rule applies: where goods and services are supplied together in a single transaction and the supplier's principal business is goods, the whole transaction is treated as a sale of goods at 13%.
The practical consequences are worth stating plainly.
Itemise. A proposal listing "assessment (6%)", "installation (9%)", "materials (13%)" as separate lines is compliant, transparent and cheaper for the client than an equivalent bundled price. Bundling is not a saving; it is a rate upgrade.
Time the invoice to the milestone. Renovation and fit-out work is frequently progress-billed, and the tax point arises on receipt or on invoicing, whichever comes first. On a chart carrying 未戌相刑 — administrative drag in matters of land and contract — the milestone documentation is exactly what goes missing. A fit-out completed in November and invoiced in January loses its period match.
Watch the input side. Materials purchased for a project carry a 13% input credit; services carry 6% or 9%. A practitioner who buys materials personally and recharges them without a compliant invoice converts a recoverable credit into a permanent cost — the same error described in this Guide's sibling volumes as light escaping through the pavilion.
And the strategic point. In a Period 9 economy, the visible intervention is the one that gets paid for, and the invisible one is the one that works. The tax code rewards the same distinction: the analysis is taxed at 6%, the theatre at 13%. Figures are illustrative and rates are indicative. This is strategic framing, not financial or tax advice; engage a qualified accountant for any filing or transaction.
Crystal Resonance for November
The month's requirements are unusually specific, because the chart is dry, the south is obstructed and the northwest needs metal.
- Clear Quartz — the reference element at the centre of the plan, where One White sits; neutral, and the correct default for the year's seed position.
- Black Tourmaline — schorl, pyroelectric and piezoelectric; for the north, where the 歲破 and 三煞 sit and where no work may be done. Place, do not install.
- Pyrite — iron disulfide; a metal-rich cube for the northwest to drain the Two Black, kept dry and unhandled.
- Selenite — gypsum, the evaporating stone; for the southeast gate, where fire and metal clash and a mediator is needed.
- Citrine — for the east, with still water, to hold what the wealth star generates rather than letting it leak into metal.
Treat the placement as a discipline of attention — a way of making a sector's requirement visible so that it is not violated by accident — rather than as a mechanism. The cure is in the arrangement of the space; the stone is the reminder.
The Practice: A Four-Stage Protocol for October 24
- Stage I — Draw the Chart (07:00–08:00). With clear quartz. Sketch the plan and mark the nine sectors with the annual star. Do not analyse; just place the numbers. The single most common error in the practice is treating a sector as a mood rather than a position, and the sketch prevents it.
- Stage II — Close the South (09:00–11:00). With black tourmaline and a metal object. Confirm that nothing is scheduled in the south — no drilling, no furniture move, no important meeting — and place the metal so that the Five Yellow has something to generate. This is the year's one non-negotiable.
- Stage III — Open the Southeast (11:00–13:00). With selenite. Move the outward-facing activity — the desk where enquiries are answered, the display that faces the street — into the southeast, and place a still water element there as the mediator between the Nine Purple and the metal that November brings. Then declare what the gate is for.
- Stage IV — Separate Clear from Turbid (after 15:00). With citrine in the east. Walk the plan and mark the boundary between the active zone and the resting zone. Then enforce it with one physical division and one working exhaust. On a day whose branches are 未 and 戌, the separation is not decoration; it is the day's own official function.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Why is 2026 called a seed year?
A: Because the annual star is One White — the 生, or generating, star of Period 9 — and it sits at the centre rather than on the perimeter. The future prosperity star is present and central, which means the year's energy is available to be stored but not yet reachable from any facade. Seed years are for planting, not harvesting.
Q2: What are the five star statuses?
A: 旺 prosperous (Nine Purple), 生 generating (One White), 退 retiring (Eight White, 退而不敗), 死 dead (Seven Red), 煞 killing (Five Yellow most severely, then Two Black, Three Jade, Six White and Four Green). In Period 9 only 9, 1 and 8 are worth building around; 6 is a useful tool.
Q3: What is the 城門 rule?
A: The gate star method: a door may be opened in a palace adjacent to the facing palace only if that palace holds the period's prosperous star (9) or its generating star (1). Without one of those, the door is only a way for people to walk in. In 2026 the reachable gate is the southeast, where Nine Purple sits.
Q4: Why is November split at the ninth?
A: Because the monthly star changes with the lunar month. The ninth lunar month carries Nine Purple at the centre until 8 November; the tenth lunar month carries Eight White from 9 November. The first eight days are for visibility, the rest of the month for collection.
Q5: Why is the northwest dangerous in the second half of November?
A: Two Black, the illness star, sits in the northwest all year. In the second half of November Nine Purple arrives there, and fire generates earth — so the illness star is strengthened precisely when the month turns conservative. It is the clearest case of a sector worsening in the favourable half of a month.
Q6: What is the single best action today?
A: Close the south. Confirm that nothing in the southern sector will be drilled, moved or decided this quarter, and give the Five Yellow something metal to generate. It is the cheapest action in this Guide and the only one whose omission cannot be corrected later.
