Executive Summary: The Star You Do Not Use to Gain

Every star in the flying-star system has a temperament, and most of them want something. The eight white wants accumulation. The nine purple wants recognition. The one white wants clarity, the six white wants authority, the four green wants study. They are, in their various ways, acquisitive stars: they are trying to build.

The seven red — 七赤, 破軍, the Broken Army — is not. Its element is metal, its trigram is 兌, its register is severance. It governs the blade, the demolition, the auction, the liquidation, the emptied room, the contract that ends, the tooth that is pulled. It is the star of removal, and because it is the star of the period before last — Period 7 ran from 1984 to 2003 — its qi is doubly retired (退氣) in Period 9.

That retirement is usually treated as a demotion. This Guide argues the opposite. A star with no ambition to build is the only star you can safely ask to destroy. In Period 9 — the fire period, 2024 to 2043 — the temptation is to keep adding: more light, more visibility, more speed, more presence. The seven red is the corrective instrument, and its tactics are precise: it does not remove by force, it removes by release of structure, which is why every traditional remedy for an earth affliction is made of metal.

October 27, 2026 is a Removal day inside a Removal month of a fire year, and the coincidence is exact enough to be useful. The pillar is Jia Xu (甲戌) — Yang Wood on the Dog — carrying the Chu (除) officer. The month is Wu Xu (戊戌); the year is Bing Wu (丙午); the Na Yin is Shan Tou Huo (山頭火); the metal branches 申酉 are void. Fire above, dry earth below, and the blade unavailable.

So the day's instruction is subtle: place the metal, but do not expect to cut with it today. Installation is the work of a void-metal day. Activation belongs to the days after.

Period 9: What Fire Actually Means

The san yuan jiu yun system divides time into three cycles of three periods, each period twenty years. Period 8 (八白, earth) ran from 2004 to 2023. Period 9 (九紫, fire) began at the lunar new year of 2024 and runs to 2043. The ruling star is 九紫 — the purple star of the southern palace, the Li trigram, the element of fire, the phase of maximum visibility.

Most Period 9 commentary is rhetorical: light, screens, the heart, the eye, the rise of the intangible. Some of it is well observed. But the physical content of the fire phase is more specific than the rhetoric suggests, and it is worth stating precisely because it disciplines the advice.

Radiation scales as the fourth power of temperature. The Stefan–Boltzmann law gives the total radiant power of a body as proportional to T⁴. Raise a surface from 300 K to 600 K and its radiant output rises sixteenfold. This is why "fire" is not a metaphor for brightness: it is a description of a regime in which small changes in intensity produce enormous changes in output. Period 9 favours exactly those domains — computation, communication, illumination, imaging, energy — where a marginal input produces a disproportionate radiance, and it punishes domains built on slow accumulation, because the returns there are linear.

Light is the fastest carrier, and the most revealing. Visibility is not neutral: what is lit is seen, and what is seen can be compared. A fire period is a period of exposure. The corresponding pathology is not darkness but glare — a condition in which everything is visible and nothing is legible.

Fire consumes its own substrate. A flame is a process, not an object; it exists only while it is consuming. This is the phase's real risk, and the classical tradition names it plainly: 火多木焚 — too much fire burns the wood. In Period 9 the failure mode is not scarcity but burnout: systems that radiate brilliantly while consuming the structure that supports them.

Which is where the seven red earns its place. Fire cannot be managed by adding more fire. It is managed by structure — by metal, by boundary, by the thing that gives a flame a shape and a limit. The removal star is the period's necessary counterweight, and it is why the classical remedies for the period's excesses are all made of metal rather than of water.

七赤破軍: Anatomy of a Removal Star

Trigram: 兌, lake, the youngest daughter, the mouth, the broken line at the top. Element: yin metal. Direction: west. Body: the mouth, the teeth, the lungs, the large intestine. Register: joy, speech, cutting, severance, litigation, and the sword.

The name 破軍 — "broken army" — comes from the star nomenclature of the 北斗, where it denotes the general who destroys in order to secure. Its classical associations are consistently subtractive: demolition, surgery, severance, liquidation, monastic ordination (the cutting of hair), the ending of a lineage, the auction, the pawn.

Four tactical properties follow, and they are the working content of this Guide.

First, it removes by releasing structure, not by force. Metal in the five-element system is the phase of contraction and definition — the axe that gives wood a shape, the blade that separates, the coin that fixes value. Its action is not to smash but to decide. This is why a metal cure is prescribed for earth afflictions: earth is the phase of stasis, and metal converts stasis into decision.

Second, it is doubled-retired in Period 9. A star two periods past has no claim on the present, which makes it safe to deploy without competing with the ruling qi. In practice: use the seven red for endings, not for gains; for clearing, not for attracting; for the demolition phase of a project, never for its launch.

Third, it is a talking star. 兌 governs the mouth. Where the seven red is well placed and well used, speech becomes precise; where it is afflicted, speech becomes litigious. Every organisation that has ever had a beautiful severance process and an ugly one has felt the difference, and the difference is usually the presence or absence of clear language.

Fourth, it cuts both ways by design. The same star that severs a bad contract severs a good one. The seven red has no judgement. What it has is sharpness, and sharpness is only as good as the hand that holds it. This is the reason the removal star requires a written rule rather than a good intention.

Why Metal Cures Earth: Transduction, Not Metaphor

The classical formula 金洩土 — "metal drains earth" — is usually taught as a cycle mnemonic. It is worth restating as physics, because the restatement makes the remedy obvious and explains why the wrong metal object fails.

A bell is a transducer. It converts a static condition — a push, a temperature, a structural stress — into a vibratory one, and radiates that vibration into the air as sound. That is what ringing is: the conversion of stored mechanical state into propagating pressure waves, which then leave the room. The bell does not destroy the energy. It changes its form and gives it an exit. That is precisely what 洩 means.

Three properties of that transduction matter for practice.

Resonance is selective. A metal object rings at its own frequencies and absorbs poorly at others; its quality factor determines how long the vibration persists. A thin, cracked or badly cast bell rings briefly and dullly — it transduces weakly. This is why the classical texts are fussy about the metal: six coins of a specific dynasty, a brass Wu Lou, a bronze bell. The fussiness is a specification, not a superstition.

Sound is a genuine environmental variable. The WHO's environmental noise guidelines associate long-term road-traffic noise above roughly 53 dB Lden with elevated cardiovascular risk, and noise has measurable effects on sleep architecture and cognitive performance. A room is not neutral to sound. The metal cure is the only classical remedy whose mechanism is acoustic, and the acoustic environment is one of the few things in a home that can be changed in an afternoon.

Absorption requires mass and porosity; reflection requires hardness. A soft furnishing absorbs; a metal surface reflects and rings; a black stone absorbs optically and re-radiates thermally (Kirchhoff's law). Each material has a mode. Placing a heavy absorber where a resonator is needed produces a dead room; placing a resonator where absorption is needed produces a ringing one. The cure is not "metal" in the abstract; it is the right mode in the right palace.

The 2026 Chart: Where Everything Sits

The annual star for 2026 is 一白, the white water star, which enters the centre. Flying the remaining stars in sequence gives the year's distribution:

Centre — 一白 (water): clarity, circulation, the movement of what has stalled. Keep the centre open; clutter here taxes every other palace.

South — 五黃 (earth): the great affliction. Traditionally the year's most sensitive sector: no drilling, no demolition, no earth-moving, no water feature. Cure with metal — a chime, six coins, a brass object. Note the logic: 五黃 is earth, and earth is drained by metal, not attacked by water.

North-west — 二黑 (earth): the illness star. Same treatment as the five yellow — metal, quiet, no renovation — with the addition of strict cleanliness, since 二黑 responds to defilement more than to any ornament.

West — 三碧 (wood): the quarrel star. Wood is drained by fire; a red accent, warm light or a small flame source in the west reduces litigation energy. Do not put a water feature here — water feeds wood and the arguments grow.

North-east — 四綠 (wood): the literary star. Water and green; good for study, writing and examinations. This is a palace to use, not to cure.

North — 六白 (metal): the authority star. Metal and pale earth; good for leadership, decisions and the signing of agreements that should hold.

South-west — 七赤 (metal): the removal star, and the reason this article exists. In 2026 the Broken Army occupies the south-west. This is the year's designated demolition site.

East — 八白 (earth): the wealth star of the previous period, still generous in the first two decades of Period 9. Earth and fire; a good palace for accumulation, storage and the balance sheet.

South-east — 九紫 (fire): the ruling star in its own palace. This is the future-facing sector — the place for whatever is being built next, and the one palace that should be bright.

The map yields an instruction that could not be simpler: clear the south-west, brighten the south-east, quiet the south and north-west, and keep the centre empty. Four moves. Everything else is detail.

October Cures: A Palace-by-Palace Protocol

October sits in the戌 month, the last of autumn, with the year's fire still dominant and the annual chart already fixed. The cures below are installations rather than rituals, which suits a 除 day: the almanac favours clearing, and the placing of a cure is a form of clearing.

South (五黃). A six-rod metal chime or a brass Wu Lou, hung rather than placed, and rung once at the start of each month. No drills. If renovation in the south is unavoidable this year, schedule it outside the month and keep the dust contained — the classical prohibition has a practical core.

North-west (二黑). Metal again, plus the least glamorous cure in the system: cleaning. Remove damp, mould, stagnant water and unused soft furnishings. A dark absorbing stone may be added for the quality of the room, but it is not the classical remedy and should not replace the metal.

West (三碧). A red accent and warm light. If the west is where arguments happen — a meeting room, a kitchen table — this is the single highest-leverage change available in October.

South-west (七赤). This is the removal palace, and the correct treatment is counter-intuitive: do not decorate it. Empty the storage, clear the floor, remove the broken furniture, finish the unfinished repairs. A removal star in a cluttered palace produces severance in the wrong place — things break that were not meant to break. A removal star in a clear palace produces exactly the clearance you wanted.

South-east (九紫). Bright, warm, active. This is where the new project's materials belong. One strong light, one object of intention, nothing stored.

Centre (一白). Empty floor, clear sightline, no boxes. Water is the star's own element, so a small, clean water source is acceptable here — unlike in the south — provided it is maintained. Stagnant water in the centre is worse than no water at all.

Ni Haixia: 肺主治節 and the Rhythm of Removal

The classical tradition assigns metal to the Lung and the Large Intestine, and the assignment is more precise than "breathing and elimination". From the Suwen: 肺者,相傅之官,治節出焉。 The Lung is the official of the chancellor; regulation and rhythm emerge from it. And of the Large Intestine: 大腸者,傳道之官,變化出焉。 The official of transmission, from which transformation emerges.

Ni Haixia (倪海厦) emphasised two functions of the Lung that are directly relevant to a discussion of the removal star. The first is 宣發肅降 — diffusion and descent. The Lung disperses qi and fluids to the surface and descends them to the lower burner; it is the organ that sets the direction of the whole system. The second is 治節 — the setting of measure. The Lung governs the seasonal rhythm of the entire body, which is why the classical texts treat autumn as the season in which the metal function is either strengthened or exposed.

Three consequences for the practice of Period 9 feng shui.

First, removal is a rhythm, not an event. 治節 is the office of measure — the setting of intervals. A house cleared once and never again is a house that will be cleared again from scratch. A house cleared on a rhythm is a house that never accumulates enough to require a purge. The removal star rewards frequency, not intensity.

Second, direction matters more than volume. 肅降 is descent. What is removed must be given a direction — down, out, away — and a removal without a destination is a displacement. This is why the protocol below ends with a named destination for every category, and why "somewhere" is not an answer.

Third, metal and grief are the same register. The classical association of the Lung with 悲 — grief — is not sentimentality. It is the observation that the metal function and the grieving function share a rhythm: both require the slow release of what has been held, at a measured interval, without force. A period that removes without acknowledging loss produces the pathology the tradition calls 肺氣虛 — a system that has emptied itself and has nothing left to circulate.

The above is presented as traditional theory and cultural interpretation. It is not medical advice. Persistent respiratory or digestive symptoms require a qualified physician.

Jia Xu: Install Today, Activate Tomorrow

Jia (甲) is the only pure Yang Wood — the great tree, the beam, the trunk that must be felled before it can hold a roof. Xu (戌) is Yang Earth, the Dog, the last month of autumn: dry, warm earth containing fire. Its hidden stems are Wu (戊), Xin (辛) and Ding (丁); the branch is the fire vault (火庫), Ding banked under ash. For a Jia day master: 偏財, 正官, 傷官 — money, authority and the impulse to break the rules.

Jia sits in the 養 (Nourishing) stage on Xu: gestation, energy formed but not expressed, a tree consolidating downward. This is the correct posture for installation work — prepare the ground; do not attempt the felling.

The chart contains no water at all: Bing Wu in the year, Wu Xu in the month, Jia Xu in the day. The Na Yin is Shan Tou Huo, fire on a mountain ridge. And the metal branches 申酉 are void.

That last detail needs a careful reading, because it is widely misapplied. The void of 申酉 belongs to the day's decade, not to the year's chart. The annual seven red in the south-west is not void because today's branches are; a metal cure hung today is a metal cure. What is unavailable is the day's own cutting capacity: on a void-metal day, an act of severance does not carry. A contract terminated today, a relationship cut today, a thing broken today tends to leave a loose end.

So the day's rule is a sequencing rule, and it is the most useful sentence in this Guide: a void-metal day is for hanging the bell, not for ringing it. Install the cures. Do the clearing. Name the severance. Then let the days that follow carry the cut.

The 13%, 9% and 6% Split Behind Every Cure

A cure is a purchase, and purchases have rates. Three lines matter, and getting them wrong is the most common silent loss in a feng shui practice or a renovation.

Goods at 13%. A brass chime, six coins, a Wu Lou, a crystal, a lamp, a water feature — all goods, all 13%, all creditable as input tax where bought for taxable business use with a compliant special invoice (專用發票). For a consultancy that uses these objects in client work, this is a recoverable cost, not an expense.

Construction and installation at 9%. Fixing a chime to a beam, building a screen, installing lighting circuits, demolishing a partition — 建築服務 at 9%, or 3% under the simplified method for small-scale taxpayers. A fit-out quoted as a single number will usually have folded goods into the service line, and the seller keeps the 4-point difference.

Consulting at 6%. The reading, the audit, the written report and the placement advice are services, typically at 6%. A practitioner who bundles a report into the sale of a set of cures has mis-characterised both; a split invoice with a defensible allocation is the correct form, and it is also the document that proves the advice was delivered.

One further rule specific to October cures: demolition is a taxable event in more than one sense. Removing a fixed asset can trigger a VAT treatment on the residual value, and materials recovered from a demolition have their own accounting life. The classical instruction to clear the south-west is sound; the commercial instruction is to price the clearance before the hammer arrives, because removal always has a bill and the bill is always larger when it is discovered afterwards.

Figures are illustrative. This is strategic framing, not tax or legal advice; engage a qualified accountant for any fit-out, installation or disposal decision.

The Practice: A Four-Move October Protocol for October 27

  1. Move I — Empty the Removal Palace (07:30–10:00). The south-west of the home or premises. Remove everything that is broken, unfinished, unused or unclaimed. Do not redecorate. The seven red wants a clear floor, not a new cushion. Photograph the empty floor — that photograph is the standard for the next twelve months.
  2. Move II — Install the Metal (10:30–12:00). Hang the chime in the south and the metal object in the north-west. Do not ring them today; the day's metal is void and a bell rung on a void day is a gesture without a carrier. Note the installation date on the object's underside in pencil — a cure with a date is a cure with a maintenance schedule.
  3. Move III — Brighten the Future (13:30–15:00). The south-east. One strong warm light, one object that represents the thing being built next, and nothing stored. Then the west: a red accent and warm light to drain the quarrel star. These two moves are the only additive acts of the day.
  4. Move IV — Set the Rhythm (20:30–21:30). Write the annual rhythm: the south-west cleared on the first weekend of every month, the chime rung on the first day of each lunar month, the centre checked weekly. 治節 is the office of measure — a cure without an interval is an ornament. Close with warm food and warm feet; a dry chart is not improved by more heat.

Stones for the working set, chosen by mode rather than by fashion. Clear quartz at the centre, where clarity is the function. Obsidian in the north, supporting the 一白 water star in its home palace. Pyrite in the west, as a metal accent that also drains the quarrel star. Keep the south and north-west for metal alone; a stone placed there instead of a chime is a substitution, and the classical remedy is specific for a reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why is 七赤 called the removal star?

A: Because its trigram is 兌, its element is yin metal, and its classical register is severance rather than gain — the blade, the demolition, the auction, the ended contract. Its name 破軍, "broken army", denotes the general who destroys in order to secure. In Period 9 it is doubly retired, which makes it safe to deploy for endings without competing with the ruling fire.

Q2: Why is metal the cure for earth stars rather than water?

A: Because 金洩土 — metal drains earth — is a transduction, not an attack. Earth is stasis; metal converts stored state into vibration and radiates it away, exactly as a bell converts a static push into sound. Water does not drain earth; in the controlling cycle 土克水, earth is strengthened by having water to control.

Q3: Where is the removal star in 2026?

A: The annual star is 一白 in the centre, which places 七赤 in the south-west. The five yellow occupies the south and the two black the north-west; the nine purple sits in the south-east. The south-west should therefore be the year's cleared, emptied sector — not a decorated one.

Q4: Why install cures on October 27 rather than activate them?

A: Because the day's metal branches 申酉 are void. The void applies to the day's decade, not to the annual chart, so a metal cure hung today is valid — but the day itself has no cutting capacity. A void-metal day is for hanging the bell, not for ringing it.

Q5: Are the 13%, 9% and 6% rates really relevant to feng shui work?

A: They are the difference between a recoverable cost and a lost one. Goods are 13%, construction and installation services 9% (or 3% simplified), consulting and reports 6%. A single-price quote folds one into another, and the seller keeps the difference.

Q6: What is the single most important October cure?

A: Emptying the south-west. The other moves are additions; this one is a subtraction, and on a 除 day inside a fire year the subtraction is the intervention. A removal star in a cluttered palace breaks things that were not meant to break.
