Executive Summary: The Granary Before the Harvest

There is a specific ten-day window in late October 2026 that most practitioners will not notice, and it decides how the whole of November is experienced.

On 7 November 2026, at the 立冬 solar term, the monthly flying star centre changes. Through the Wu Xu month — 8 October to 6 November — the centre holds 九紫 (Nine Purple), which is also Period 9's own base star. The result is a doubled nine: fire on fire, at the pivot, for a full month. From 7 November, the centre becomes 八白 (Eight White) — the star the tradition calls the Fullness star, the mountain, the granary.

That handover is the "November split", and it is not a small adjustment. It is the difference between a month that spends and a month that stores. Fire at the centre produces visibility, celebration and volatility in equal measure. Earth at the centre produces accumulation, consolidation and — for anyone who mistakes it for growth — the peculiar frustration of a month in which nothing seems to move while everything quietly settles.

Here is the difficulty that this Guide addresses directly. 八白 is a retired star. Eight was the ruling star of Period 8, which ended in 2024. In Period 9 it is 退氣, receding. It no longer generates prosperity the way it did for twenty years, and anyone who treats its arrival in the centre as a renewal of the old boom will be disappointed. But retirement is not death. A retired official still knows the filing system. In Period 9, 八白 retains one function that no other star performs: it is the container. Fire needs a hearth, and the hearth is earth.

Which brings us to today. 28 October 2026 is a 滿 (Man, Fullness) day with the pillar 乙亥 (Yi Hai), in the Wu Xu month of the Bing Wu year, Na Yin 山頭火 (Fire on the Mountain). The Fullness officer's register is 造倉修倉 — build and repair the granary. The day's branch, 亥, is the very branch that begins the new month on 7 November. Today is a rehearsal in the day pillar of the month that has not yet arrived.

The argument of this Guide can be stated in one sentence, and everything below supports it: you have ten days to build the container, and the Fullness star will arrive on 7 November to fill whatever you have built — or to spill onto the floor if you have built nothing.

Reading Three Layers Without Confusing Them

Before the sector map, a methodological point, because most errors in annual forecasting come from mixing layers rather than from misreading a star.

Three charts apply to any building in November 2026. The period chart (運盤) is fixed for twenty years: nine in the centre, one in the northwest, two in the west, three in the northeast, four in the south, five in the north, six in the southwest, seven in the east and eight in the southeast. The annual chart (年盤) changes each year: in the Bing Wu year of 2026, one white sits in the centre, with two in the northwest, three in the west, four in the northeast, five in the south, six in the north, seven in the southwest, eight in the east and nine in the southeast. The monthly chart (月盤) changes at each solar term.

The layers do not replace each other; they stack. A palace in November therefore carries three numbers, and the reading is a combination, not a vote. Two rules keep the stack legible.

Rule one: the period is the constitution, the year is the weather, the month is the day. A palace whose period star is unfavourable cannot be permanently fixed by a good month, and a palace whose period star is favourable cannot be permanently ruined by a bad one. The month tells you what to do now; the period tells you what the building is for.

Rule two: read the generating and controlling relations between the three numbers, not their individual reputations. A "bad" star that is being drained by a "good" one is quiet. A "good" star that is being drained by two others is a promise with no delivery. The most useful question in front of any palace is not "which star is here" but "what is feeding what".

One further caution. The three numbers occupy the same palace but not the same position: the period star is the base, the annual star is the activation, and the monthly star is the trigger. When a monthly star arrives that supports the annual, the month's events are amplified. When it attacks the annual, the month produces friction in whatever the annual governs. That is the mechanism behind everything in the sector map below.

八白: Anatomy of a Retired Star

八白 is earth, and its trigram is 艮 — the mountain, the gate, the youngest son, the hand, the pause between two movements. Its classical associations are 田產 (landed property), storage, inheritance, and the accumulation that happens when nothing is being spent. Its number is eight, its element is earth, and in Period 8 it was the most desirable star in the chart.

Since 2024 it has been 退氣, and honest practice requires saying what that means. It does not mean that property, savings and stored value have become worthless. It means they have stopped appreciating on their own. During Period 8, earth did the work: you held an asset and the period inflated it. In Period 9, fire rules, and fire does not inflate earth — it hardens it. The mountain is no longer growing; it is settling.

What survives is function. Earth in a fire period has exactly three jobs, and they are the three jobs on which every November decision should be sorted.

Job one: the hearth. Fire without containment is a wildfire; fire with containment is a hearth. Nine Purple at the centre without an earth base scatters — attention fragments, launches multiply, nothing is finished. Eight White at the centre is the hearth under the flame: the month in which the fire that has been burning since October is finally given somewhere to sit.

Job two: the granary. 八白 is the star of the store. Its arrival in the centre is the chart's own instruction to convert flow into stock: cash into reserves, interest into contracts, contacts into records, knowledge into documentation. What is not converted in a Fullness month tends to be spent in the following fire month.

Job three: the brake. A period of fire accelerates. Periods of acceleration produce the specific error of mistaking motion for progress. Eight White is the only star in the chart that reliably slows things down, which is why a Fullness month feels unproductive and is in fact the most productive month for anything that must last.

There is a warning built into the star as well, and it is the one that catches owner-operators. 八 White is 土, and earth that is not worked becomes 濕 — damp, inert, silting. The classical caution against a full granary is not theft but rot: grain that is never turned spoils. A November spent purely in consolidation, with nothing released and nothing turned, produces a store that smells of the previous season. The Fullness officer's own register resolves this neatly — 造倉, 修倉, 開市, 納財, 立券, 宴會. Fill, open, sign, feast, and then fill again. A granary is a cycle, not a vault.

The November Split: What Changes on 7 November

The monthly flying sequence for 2026 is fixed by the year's stem and runs downward by one each month from the eight that sits in the first month. The result is that the Wu Xu month (8 October – 6 November) carries nine in the centre and the Ji Hai month (7 November – 6 December) carries eight.

Because Period 9's own base chart also places nine in the centre, October's monthly chart is identical to the period chart. For a full month, every palace has carried a doubled period star. That is a rare and specific condition, and its signature is exactly what the month has felt like: intensity without direction, strong signals everywhere, and a persistent sense that something is about to happen without any clarity about what.

On 7 November the centre drops from nine to eight, and every palace shifts. The Nine Purple moves to the northwest; One White to the west; Two Black to the northeast; Three Green to the south; Four Green to the north; Five Yellow to the southwest; Six White to the east; Seven Red to the southeast.

Three consequences follow immediately, and they are the practical content of the split.

First, the Five Yellow moves from the north to the southwest. All through 2026 the north has carried the period's Five Yellow, drained by the year's Six White — a difficult but managed configuration. In November the monthly Five lands in the southwest, where the year's Seven Red and the period's Six White are already in residence. The southwest becomes the month's most demanding sector.

Second, the south receives Three Green on top of the year's Five Yellow. The annual Five has sat in the south since February. In November, wood arrives to attack it — 木剋土 — and a Five Yellow that is being controlled is traditionally more volatile than one that is merely present.

Third, the centre receives earth, and the year's One White is dammed. The annual One White in the centre has been the year's governing influence: water at the pivot, favouring clarity, information and flow. In November, earth arrives above it and 土剋水. Clarity does not disappear; it slows. Decisions that were obvious in September will require meetings in November. That is not obstruction; it is the month's tempo, and fighting it is the single most common way to waste it.

The practical division is therefore clean. 1–6 November is the last of the fire month: finish, announce, celebrate, launch — anything that needs visibility and speed. 7–30 November is the earth month: sign, store, audit, document, repair, and hold. Work attempted in the wrong half of the split will feel like pushing a door that opens the other way.

The November Sector Map: Nine Palaces, Three Layers

The table below sets the three layers side by side for the Ji Hai month, with the combination reading and the single most useful action for each palace. Read the "combination" column before the "action" column; the action is a consequence, not a recipe.

Sector Period 9 Annual 2026 Monthly (from 7 Nov) Reading Action
Centre 中宮 9 紫 1 白 8 白 Earth dams water. The year's clarity slows; the period's fire finds a hearth. Keep lit, clear and warm. Ceramic or stone at the pivot. No water feature.
North 坎 5 黃 6 白 4 綠 The period's Five Yellow, drained by metal all year, now brushed by wood. Mild activation. Keep quiet. No drilling, no plants, no new water. Metal stays.
Northeast 艮 3 碧 4 綠 2 黑 Double wood, the classic 碧綠風 of study and writing, with earth arriving to be attacked. The month's planning desk. Water here to feed the wood; keep earth and yellow out.
East 震 7 赤 8 白 6 白 The Fullness star drained by two metals. Cash quietly becomes equipment. Warm light to feed the earth and check the metal. Audit what was bought.
Southeast 巽 8 白 9 紫 7 赤 The year's best pair, fire generating earth, until the sword arrives and terms harden. Sign before the 7th. Afterwards soften metal with water; add no fire.
South 離 4 綠 5 黃 3 綠 Wood attacks the annual Five Yellow from two directions. The month's second risk zone. Metal to drain the five and check the wood. No red, no drilling, no demolition.
Southwest 坤 6 白 7 赤 5 黃 Earth feeds the sword while the Five Yellow arrives: the month's sharpest configuration. Water to soften the metal. No metal objects, no yellow, no construction.
West 兌 2 黑 3 碧 1 白 Water feeds wood, wood attacks earth: speech, contracts and small ailments. Fire as the bridge — wood to fire to earth. A warm lamp, not a plant.
Northwest 乾 1 白 2 黑 9 紫 Fire feeds the illness star at the palace of authority. Watch the leadership's health. Metal to drain the two. Cool white and gold; no red in the northwest.

The Three Risk Zones, Read Precisely

The southwest is the month's primary risk, and the risk is not vague. Five Yellow arrives in a palace already holding Six White and Seven Red. Earth generates metal, so the incoming Five does not sit inertly — it feeds the two metal stars, and Seven Red is 破軍, the star of severance, with Six White beside it forming the classical 交劍 configuration, metal against metal. The compound signature is sharpness: sharp words, sharp instruments, sharp deadlines. In the body, 坤 governs the abdomen and the spleen-stomach; in the household, the mother and the staff. November's most likely damage in this sector is a dispute that escalates because someone spoke precisely when precision was not what was needed. The cure is water — dark glass, a small still bowl, blue or black — because 金生水 drains the metal that is doing the cutting. Do not place metal here, do not place yellow or ceramic, and do not begin any construction in the southwest this month.

The south is secondary but structurally interesting. The annual Five Yellow has occupied the southern palace since February, and the period and month both send wood against it — 四綠 and 三碧, 木剋土. A Five Yellow under control is not quieter than one left alone; it is more reactive, because the controlling element provokes rather than settles. The traditional reading is friction at the level of reputation and visibility — 離 is the palace of the eye, of being seen. Expect misunderstandings that become public. The cure is metal, which does two jobs at once here: it drains the earth of the Five and it controls the wood that is provoking it. White metal, a brass bell, a round clock — nothing red, nothing green.

The west is the quiet third risk. One White arrives and feeds Three Green, which attacks Two Black. 兌 is the mouth, and the combination is the classical signature of talk that costs money: a verbal agreement that was never written, a promise made in a meeting, a misunderstanding between two people who each thought the other had confirmed. The cure is a bridge, not a suppression: fire, because 木生火 and 火生土, converting the attacking wood into support for the earth. A warm lamp in the west, not a plant. And in plain terms: put it in writing in November.

The Two Opportunities, and One Leak

The southeast is the year's best configuration and the month's most interesting negotiation. Period Eight and annual Nine give 火生土 — fire generating earth, the generative relation, in 巽, the palace the tradition associates with wealth and with documents. Through October this has been the strongest sector in the building. In November, Seven Red arrives and the fire that was generating earth now also controls metal — the relationship turns from production to friction. This is not a reversal; it is a change in the character of the same energy. The practical instruction is a deadline: complete and sign in the southeast before 7 November, and after that date expect the same deal to require renegotiation. If a contract is already in play, the split is the difference between a signature and a redraft.

The northeast is the month's workspace. Three Green and Four Green together are the 碧綠風, the double wood of scholarship, writing and planning — and in a month whose centre is earth and whose dominant note is consolidation, this is where the thinking should happen. The arrival of Two Black earth creates a mild 木剋土, which in practice means the sector is productive but slightly irritating: good for drafting, poor for resting. Water here feeds the wood and keeps the irritation from becoming a headache.

The east is the leak, and it is the one most people misread as success. The annual Eight White — the Fullness star, the year's granary — sits in 震, where period Seven and month Six are both metal. 土生金: the earth is generating metal continuously, which means the granary is being converted into hardware. In business terms, revenue arrives and immediately becomes equipment, subscriptions, tooling and inventory. The number on the top line looks correct and the reserve does not grow. The cure is a warm light and a genuine audit of what was bought this year: how much of 2026's income is now sitting in things that do not produce income? That question, asked in a Fullness month, is worth more than any object placed in the sector.

The north, finally, is the quiet sector and should be left alone. The period's Five Yellow has been there since 2024, drained all year by the annual Six White — a configuration that has kept 2026 relatively forgiving in the north. November adds only Four Green, a mild provocation. Do nothing. In a month of interventions, the discipline of not touching the one sector that is already managed is a form of skill.

Ni Haixia: 見肝之病,知肝傳脾

The classical medical canon contains the most precise statement of pre-emptive sector work in the whole tradition, and it is not in a feng shui text.

The Jingui Yaolue opens with a line that Ni Haixia (倪海厦) returned to constantly in his teaching of the classical formulas: 見肝之病,知肝傳脾,當先實脾。 — Seeing disease in the liver, know that it will transmit to the spleen; therefore first strengthen the spleen. Four characters carry the doctrine: 當先實脾, first make the spleen solid.

This is a theory of transmission, and it is the reason Chinese medicine is preventive rather than reactive. The five phases do not stay still. A disturbance in one will move to the phase it controls, and the sequence is predictable: 木剋土, so liver disorder reaches the spleen; 土剋水, so spleen disorder reaches the kidney; and so on around the cycle. The physician who waits for the spleen to fail is treating a disease that has already travelled. The physician who strengthens the spleen on seeing the liver sign is treating the place the disease is going.

Ni Haixia's emphasis on this principle was paired with a second: 四季脾旺不受邪,即勿補之 — when the spleen is flourishing in its season, it does not receive pathogenic influence, and one should not tonify it. The two lines together give a complete rule, and it is the rule this Guide applies to November.

Strengthen what is about to be attacked; do not supplement what is already full. In a Fullness month, the second half of that rule is the one that matters. November is a granary month: the temptation is to add — more stock, more staff, more product, more supplements. The classical answer is that a full granary does not need more grain; it needs turning, drying, recording and defending. Tonics given to a system that is already full become 濕 — dampness — and dampness is the specific pathology of earth in excess: heaviness, lethargy, a feeling of being stuck without knowing why.

Translated into spatial practice, the doctrine yields a sequence that should govern the next ten days. Identify where the disturbance is now — which is what the October double-nine month has been doing, loudly. Identify where it will transmit — the palace that the current configuration controls. Strengthen that palace before the month turns. And then, when 八白 arrives at the centre on 7 November, do not supplement the centre. Let it be the hearth. Light it, clear it, and leave it full.

乙亥 and 山頭火: A Rehearsal in the Day Pillar

The day chart is unusually eloquent about the month that is coming, and three features are worth naming.

Hai is the month branch that begins on 7 November. Today's day branch and the incoming month branch are the same character — 亥 upon 亥. In the classical reading this is a 伏吟 relation between day and month: a doubling, a rehearsal, the same note struck twice. The practical meaning is that what is set in motion today is a template for the month. Whatever pattern you establish in the next ten days — the way you file, the way you store, the way you close a matter — is the pattern that November will repeat at scale.

Hai is 天門 and 水庫 — the Heavenly Gate and the water vault. A gate is a threshold, and the water vault is a reservoir. The combination is exactly the image of a month boundary: something opens, and behind it there is storage. It also supplies the day's specific warning, because 亥 holds both 壬 (Direct Resource) and 甲 (Rob Wealth) — support and rivalry in the same container. Whatever is stored in November will be claimed by more than one party unless the claim is written down.

山頭火 is the day's Na Yin, and its meaning is precise: a beacon on a summit, seen from the valley, warming no one. Set against a month whose centre becomes a granary, the image reads as a sequence. The beacon is lit before the season turns, so that everyone knows where the granary is. Visibility now, storage after. Not the other way round.

滿, the officer, governs 造倉修倉 — building and repairing granaries — with 開市, 納財, 立券 and 宴會. It is the one day in this stretch whose classical permissions are, almost word for word, the November agenda. And its forbearance on 破土 and 安葬 is consistent with the year's conditions: the north is carrying the period's Five Yellow and the year's 三煞 falls in the 亥子丑 direction, so no ground should be broken to the north of a building this month.

There is one further constraint. Metal is void today — the 乙亥 day belongs to the 甲戌 decade, whose empty branches are 申 and 酉. The blade is unavailable. Nothing should be terminated, cancelled, cut or renegotiated on 28 October. Build the container; do not prune the contents.

The 13% Question: A Two-Phase Engagement and Its Invoice

A feng shui engagement that spans the November split has a tax structure as well as a spatial one, and the two are more closely related than they appear.

The service is 6%. A consultation, an audit, a report, a placement plan — these are modern services taxed at 6%. This is the correct rate for the advisory work, and it is the rate most practitioners under-use because they invoice everything as goods.

The objects are 13%. Crystals, cures, bells, screens, planters, compasses — sales of goods at 13%. Where a client buys both the audit and the objects, the invoice must show two lines at two rates; where different-rate items are not separately accounted for, the highest rate applies to the whole. A single "feng shui package" price is therefore a 13% price even when most of the value is advisory work.

The printed material is 9%. A bound report, a chart book, a printed annual almanac sold as an object is printed matter at 9%. A PDF is not printed matter; it is a service delivered electronically, and it follows the service rate. The distinction is the medium, not the content.

The physical remediation is 9% if it is construction. Where the engagement includes actual building work — a partition, a doorway, a floor — that portion falls under construction services at 9%, and it should be contracted and invoiced separately from the advisory work, because it is a different taxable activity with different documentation requirements.

Now the part that ties back to the split. Because the October phase (fire month, audit and activation) and the November phase (earth month, consolidation and documentation) are genuinely distinct deliverables with distinct timing, they can legitimately be contracted and invoiced as two phases. That is not a device; it is an accurate description of the work, and it has three real consequences. The client receives a clear scope for each phase. The revenue is recognised when each phase is performed. And the tax point — the moment the VAT obligation arises — follows the invoice or the contractual payment date for each phase rather than being bunched at the end.

What must not happen is the reverse: a single undifferentiated fee split after the fact into two invoices with no separate scope. That is not a split; it is a re-dating, and it will not survive a question. The rule is the same as the spatial rule: the container must exist before the contents arrive. Define the two phases now, in writing, on a Fullness day whose whole register is about building containers — and then let November fill them.

The Practice: A Ten-Day Build, Then a Month of Filling

  1. Days 1–2 (28–29 October) — Survey and Record. Walk the nine sectors with a compass and write down what is actually in each one. Photograph the southwest and the south. Today's void metal means no removals: record only. The record is the granary's first wall.
  2. Days 3–4 (30–31 October) — Build the Southwest Cure. Water in the southwest, before the Five Yellow arrives: a dark glass bowl, a still container, black or deep blue. Remove metal objects, yellow ceramics and anything sharp from that palace. Do it now, while the palace is still relatively quiet.
  3. Days 5–7 (1–3 November) — The Fire Phase, Completed. This is the last of the double-nine month. Announce, launch, celebrate, publish, and finish the negotiations that must be finished. Sign in the southeast if a signature is available. After the 7th, the same terms will cost more to close.
  4. Days 8–10 (4–6 November) — Seal the Container. File the contracts, reconcile the accounts, label the storage, back up the records, and write the November scope for each engagement as two phases. Nothing new is started in these three days.
  5. 7 November onward — The Fullness Month. On the day 八白 takes the centre, do one thing only in the central palace: light it. A warm lamp, a candle, a clean surface, a stone or ceramic object. No water feature, no clutter, no new furniture. Then work the month's actual agenda — sign, store, turn, document — and resist the impulse to supplement a granary that is already full.

A single sentence will keep the whole month straight: in October the fire was the message; in November the earth is the medium. The message does not need to be louder. It needs somewhere to be kept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What exactly changes on 7 November 2026?

A: The monthly flying star centre. Through the Wu Xu month the centre holds Nine Purple, which is also Period 9's base star, producing a doubled nine. At the 立冬 solar term on 7 November the centre becomes Eight White, and every palace shifts: Nine Purple to the northwest, Five Yellow to the southwest, Three Green to the south, and so on.

Q2: Is 八白 still a lucky star in Period 9?

A: It is 退氣 — retired — so it no longer generates growth the way it did in Period 8. What it retains is function: it is earth, and earth is the hearth, the granary and the brake. In a fire period those are scarce and valuable, but they produce consolidation rather than expansion.

Q3: Which sector is most at risk in November 2026?

A: The southwest. The monthly Five Yellow arrives where the year's Seven Red and the period's Six White already sit, and earth generates metal, feeding the sharpest pair in the chart. The signature is disputes and sharp words, with the abdomen and the household's senior female indicated. The cure is water, which drains the metal.

Q4: Why should contracts be signed before 7 November?

A: Because the southeast carries Period Eight with the annual Nine — fire generating earth, the year's most productive pair — until Seven Red arrives in November and the relationship turns from generation to friction. The same terms that close cleanly in October tend to require redrafting after the split.

Q5: What does 見肝之病,知肝傳脾 mean for a building?

A: It is the doctrine of transmission: a disturbance moves to the phase it controls, so treat the place the problem is going rather than the place it currently is. Applied spatially, it means strengthening the palace that the current configuration will attack — before the month turns — rather than repairing the palace that is already showing symptoms.

Q6: Why is a two-phase engagement not just an invoicing trick?

A: Because the phases are genuinely different work with different timing: audit and activation in the fire month, consolidation and documentation in the earth month. Separate scope, separate deliverables and separate invoices at 6% for service, 13% for goods and 9% for printed matter are an accurate description of the engagement. Splitting one undifferentiated fee after the fact is not.
