Executive Summary: One Ten Among Eight Odds
There is a doctrine of balance in Xuan Kong feng shui that is older, stricter and far more useful than any talk of "harmonising" a space, and it can be stated in two characters: 合十 — sum to ten.
The rule is simple. Two stars in the same palace are in a balanced relation when their numbers add to ten: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 with itself. The classical commentaries describe such a pair as 夫婦相配, a matched couple, and — this is the part that is usually dropped — a 合十 pair is not feared even when its two elements control each other. Water and fire, which would otherwise be read as 水剋火, are read as a balanced pair when they sum to ten. The control is not removed. It is resolved, in the way that a bridge resolves the opposition of two banks.
Now apply the rule to the year 2026, which is what this Guide does in full below. The period chart of Period 9 places 九紫 in the centre. The annual chart of the Bing Wu year places 一白 in the centre. Nine and one sum to ten. Every other palace, when the period and annual numbers are added, produces an odd sum: three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, seventeen.
So the year has an exact and slightly uncomfortable description. 2026 is a single ten among eight odds. The pivot is balanced and the field is not. Which is why the year has felt the way it has felt — calm at the centre, turbulent at the edges, a sense that the top of the organisation knows what it is doing while every department is improvising. That is not a metaphor. It is the arithmetic of the chart.
October 29, 2026 is the day on which this configuration is repeated at every scale at once. Pillar Bing Zi (丙子): Yang Fire on the Rat, fire and water, nine and one — a 合十 written into the day. Officer Ping (平, Balance): the levelling officer, whose permissions are all repairs and whose prohibitions are all inaugurations. Na Yin 澗下水: water in a ravine, the contained stream. Year, day and officer all say the same word. That does not happen often, and it determines the tone of everything below.
One warning belongs in the summary rather than buried in the body, because it is the thesis of the article. Balance is not improvement. A 合十 does not make a palace fortunate; it makes it level. A chronic illness star in a balanced palace is a condition that neither worsens nor resolves. A stalled negotiation in a balanced palace is a negotiation that stays exactly where it is. Levelling is what the Ping officer does, and anyone who mistakes it for progress will spend the year waiting for a change that the chart never promised.

The Three Good Relations, and What Each One Actually Does
Before the tables, the grammar. Xuan Kong recognises a small number of favourable relations between two numbers in a palace, and they are not interchangeable. Each does a different job, and confusing them is the commonest analytical error after confusing the layers themselves.
合十 — sum to ten. The relation of balance and completion. 1–9, 2–8, 3–7, 4–6, 5–5. Its function is stabilisation. It does not add energy and it does not remove obstruction; it holds a configuration at a level. This is why it is the relation of the 夫婦 and of the completed cycle, and why the classical texts treat a 合十 palace as safe rather than prosperous. Safe and prosperous are different ratings, and the whole of the October review below depends on keeping them apart.
生成 — generation. The five pairs of the productive cycle: 1–6 water, 2–7 fire, 3–8 wood, 4–9 metal, 5–10 earth. Its function is growth. A generating pair produces movement in a direction; the palace becomes more active, and whether that activity is welcome depends on what is being generated and for whom. This is the relation people mean when they say two stars "combine well", and it is the one that most often disappoints, because growth without a container is precisely what a 合十 supplies.
比和 — same element. Two stars of the same phase, and therefore mutually reinforcing. Its function is intensification. A 比和 palace does more of whatever it already does. When what it already does is good, 比和 is excellent; when it is not, 比和 is the mechanism by which a small problem becomes a large one. Two woods are the scholar's study; two metals are the pair of swords.
相剋 — control. Not a "bad" relation, though it is always read as one. Control is what gives a configuration direction. A palace with no controlling relation anywhere in it is a palace with no shape, which is why the classical texts do not treat control as damage but as structure. The question is always which element is doing the controlling and whether the controlled element can bear it.
The Ordering Rule
These four stack in a fixed order of authority, and the order is the practical content of this section.
合十 outranks 生成. A balanced pair is stable even if it does not generate. A generating pair that is not balanced grows until something else stops it. So when a palace shows one pair summing to ten and another pair generating, the reading is stability with movement inside it — the best configuration available, and the one to protect.
比和 intensifies whatever the dominant relation is doing. It is a multiplier, not a verdict. Two metals beside a 合十 pair make the balance hard and effective; two metals beside a control make the control severe.
And the diagnostic that follows: ask which relation dominates the palace before asking whether the palace is good. Most sector advice in circulation skips the first question and answers the second, which is why it so often recommends a cure for a condition that is not present.
The 2026 Chart as a Balance Problem
Here is the full year, set out with the arithmetic visible. The period column is fixed for the twenty years from 2024. The annual column is the Bing Wu year. The sum is the balance test.
| Sector | Period 9 | Annual 2026 | Sum | Relation | What the year has done here |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Centre 中宮 | 9 紫 | 1 白 | 10 | 合十 | The year's only balance. Fire and water held level at the pivot: clarity and visibility in equal measure, neither winning. |
| Northwest 乾 | 1 白 | 2 黑 | 3 | 土剋水 | Earth over water at the palace of authority. The illness star sits on the year's clearest signal: leadership fatigue, chronic strain. |
| West 兌 | 2 黑 | 3 碧 | 5 | 木剋土 | Wood attacking earth in the palace of the mouth. Words that cost money; small ailments of throat and chest. |
| Northeast 艮 | 3 碧 | 4 綠 | 7 | 比和 | Double wood, the 碧綠風 of study and drafting. The year's most productive palace for thinking, and its least restful. |
| South 離 | 4 綠 | 5 黃 | 9 | 木剋土 | Wood controlling the Five Yellow in the palace of visibility. Reputation friction; a Five that is provoked rather than inert. |
| North 坎 | 5 黃 | 6 白 | 11 | 土生金 | The Five Yellow drained continuously by metal. A difficult star made manageable: the year's quietest risk. |
| Southwest 坤 | 6 白 | 7 赤 | 13 | 比和 | Double metal: 交劍, the crossed swords. The year's sharpest palace, and the one where precision has done the most damage. |
| East 震 | 7 赤 | 8 白 | 15 | 土生金 | The granary generating metal. Income arriving and immediately becoming equipment, tooling and inventory. |
| Southeast 巽 | 8 白 | 9 紫 | 17 | 火生土 | Fire generating earth in the palace of documents and wealth. The year's best pair, and its most time-limited opportunity. |
Read the sum column as a set: 10, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17. Nine palaces, nine different sums, one even number. The arithmetic makes two points that no amount of sector-by-sector advice can make.
First, the balance is unique and localised. Only the pivot is level. Everything else is at an odd distance from ten — three, five, seven away, or one, three, five, seven beyond. A practitioner working in 2026 is therefore not distributing balance; they are carrying it outward from a single point, which is a much more specific and much more tiring job.
Second, no other palace can be brought to ten by anything placed in it. This is the discipline the year demands and the one most easily abandoned. A crystal, a colour, a bowl of water changes the quality of a palace's activity. It does not change the arithmetic. The five-element cures work on the element layer — draining, feeding, bridging — and the balance layer is set by the chart. You can soften a palace. You cannot level it. Confusing the two produces the specific disappointment of a year in which every room was corrected and nothing felt resolved.
What the Odd Sums Mean in Practice
An odd sum is not a defect. It is a statement that the palace is committed to a direction — generating, controlling, or reinforcing — rather than held. A committed palace does things. The year's work is therefore to know, palace by palace, which direction each is committed to, and to decide whether that is the direction you want your life to go in that sector.
The northeast, at seven, is committed to thinking. The southwest, at thirteen, is committed to precision. The east, at fifteen, is committed to converting stock into equipment. The southeast, at seventeen, is committed to producing. Each of those is useful if it is what you need and corrosive if it is not, and the sum tells you which palace will not stop doing what it does, however much you wish it would.
The October Review: A Month of 伏吟
The Wu Xu month runs from 8 October to 6 November, and its monthly centre holds 九紫 — the same star that sits at Period 9's own centre. The consequence, stated plainly, is that for a full month the monthly chart and the period chart were identical.
That condition has a name: 伏吟, "crying in hiding". The term describes a star that repeats in the same palace across two layers — the same note struck twice in the same place. Its classical signature is not danger. It is repetition without progress: a doubling that intensifies what is present and generates nothing new, because generation requires a difference and 伏吟 supplies none.
Applied across the whole chart, October presented an unusual and rather beautiful uniformity. Every palace held its period star doubled: 9–9 at the centre, 1–1 in the northwest, 2–2 in the west, 3–3 in the northeast, 4–4 in the south, 5–5 in the north, 6–6 in the southwest, 7–7 in the east, 8–8 in the southeast. Nine palaces and nine 比和 of period with month — and not one 合十 among them, because a doubled star has no partner to make ten with. The single exception was the centre, where the annual One White sat beside the period Nine, and nine and one make ten.
Which gives the month its exact one-line description: in October, eight palaces repeated and one palace balanced.
This is why the month felt the way it felt. Every sector was doing more of what it already does, at greater volume, with no mechanism anywhere in the chart for producing something that had not existed before. Intensity without novelty reads subjectively as pressure. People described October as heavy, or as stuck, or as busy in a way that produced nothing — and the chart agrees with all three descriptions, because 伏吟 is precisely the configuration of effort without difference.
The Review Method
A review is not a memory. It is a comparison against a baseline, and the first rule of this one is that a review without a recorded baseline is a feeling rather than a finding. If nothing was written down in September, the honest position is that this year's October cannot be audited — and the correct action is to record a baseline today for the next one.
Assuming a baseline exists, the method has four steps and takes about an hour.
Step one: score each palace against its own relation. Not against an ideal — against the relation the table above assigns it. The east was 土生金, generating metal. The question is not "was the east good?" but "did the east convert stock into equipment, and was that the conversion I wanted?" The relation supplies the question; the record supplies the answer.
Step two: assign one of three verdicts. 過, over — the palace's activity exceeded what the purpose required. 不及, under — the activity was present but insufficient to do the job. 平, level — the activity matched the requirement. Note that 平 is a verdict about proportion, not about pleasantness. A difficult palace can earn 平.
Step three: identify what was doubled. Because the month was 伏吟, anything that grew in October grew by repetition rather than by generation. Ask of each 過 verdict: what was I repeating? The answer is usually a habit rather than a decision, and it is the single most valuable output of the review, because a repeated habit is cheap to change and impossible to see from inside.
Step four: hand forward, do not resolve. October's unresolved items are not November's problems; they are November's material. Under 伏吟 nothing could be finished, so nothing should be judged as failed. The correct output of the review is a short list of what is now ready to be given a container — which is exactly the transition from a fire month to an earth month, and exactly what the November split provides.
The October Scorecard
The table below is the review, palace by palace, in the form it should be kept. The right-hand column is the audit question, not the answer — the answer belongs to your own record.
| Sector | October signature | The audit question |
|---|---|---|
| Centre | 9–9 doubled, with 1 white in 合十 | Did the centre hold, or did it merely repeat? The only palace that could balance — was anything actually decided at the pivot? |
| Northwest | 1–1 doubled, 比和, water | Clarity doubled into repetition. Was the same analysis produced twice and acted on once? |
| West | 2–2 doubled, 比和, earth | Talk doubled. Which conversation was held more than once because it was never concluded? |
| Northeast | 3–3 doubled, 比和, wood | Planning doubled. How many drafts were made and how many were finished? |
| South | 4–4 doubled, 比和, wood | Visibility doubled. What was announced twice, and did the second announcement add anything? |
| North | 5–5 doubled, 比和, earth | The difficult star doubled into a heavy month. What was carried that should have been set down? |
| Southwest | 6–6 doubled, 比和, metal | Precision doubled into sharpness. What was said accurately that would have been better said kindly? |
| East | 7–7 doubled, 比和, metal | Severance doubled. What was ended in October that could have been renegotiated? |
| Southeast | 8–8 doubled, 比和, earth | The granary doubled. What was stored that has not been recorded, and will therefore be lost? |
Two features of this scorecard are worth naming because they are easy to miss. The first is that every audit question is a question about repetition, and the reason is structural rather than stylistic: 伏吟 is the doubling of a star, so the month's characteristic error is doing the right thing twice. The second is that not one of the questions requires a purchase. There is no cure item, no object and no placement in the entire review. A review that ends in a shopping list has not reviewed anything; it has merely changed the subject.
The Migrating Balance: November and December
Here the arithmetic produces something no interpretation could have supplied, and it is the most useful forecast in this Guide. But first, the counting rule must be stated, because a rule that is not stated cannot be checked.
A 合十 requires two different numbers that sum to ten: 1–9, 2–8, 3–7, 4–6. The 5–5 case is excluded, and the exclusion is not a convenience. The Five Yellow is not a star with a partner; it is the pivot's own number doubled, and 五黃疊臨 is read classically as intensification, not balance. A palace holding two Fives is heavy, not level. So the count below admits only genuine couples, and any palace holding three stars is tested on all three of its pairs.
With the monthly layer added, the number of balanced palaces in the chart changes — and it changes upward.
| Month | Centre | Palaces at 合十 | The pairs | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Wu Xu 8 Oct – 6 Nov |
9 紫 | One — centre only | Period 9 + annual 1 | All balance at the pivot. Eight 伏吟 palaces elsewhere; nothing generated anywhere but at the centre. |
|
Ji Hai 7 Nov – 6 Dec |
8 白 | Three — centre, northwest, north | 9+1 (centre); period 1 + monthly 9 (乾); annual 6 + monthly 4 (坎) | Balance reaches the palace of authority and touches the palace of the year's quiet risk. Authority is stabilised, not improved. |
|
Geng Zi 7 Dec – 5 Jan |
7 赤 | Three — centre, southwest, northwest | 9+1 (centre); period 6 + monthly 4 (坤); annual 2 + monthly 8 (乾) | The year's sharpest palace becomes its steadiest exactly at year-end. The northwest levels for a second consecutive month. |
The count runs one, then three, then three, and that progression is the answer to the question the year has been asking since January. For ten months the chart has held a single point of balance. As the year closes, the balance multiplies — it begins to propagate outward from the pivot, which is precisely the operation the Ping officer asks for and precisely what a 合十 at the centre alone cannot do for you.
The Northwest: Two Months, Two Pairs
The most interesting result in the table is not the count but the identity of the palaces, and one of them appears twice.
The northwest is balanced in November by the period One White meeting the monthly Nine Purple — water and fire, nine and one. This is the classical case of a 合十 resolving a controlling pair: 水剋火 is read as a matched couple rather than as damage, and the effect on the palace is levelling. What makes this decisive is the company. The annual Two Black — the illness star — is also in the northwest, in the palace of 乾: the head, the father, the senior leader, the seat of authority.
A levelled illness star is not a resolved one, and the distinction is the whole thesis of this article. The precise reading is a chronic condition that neither improves nor worsens: blood pressure sitting at the top of the normal range, a back that aches without progressing, a management team that is tired in a stable way. November will not fix the northwest. November will hold it — and holding is what a chronic condition needs before anything else can be done about it.
In December the same palace is balanced again, by a different pair: the annual Two Black meeting the monthly Eight White, earth with earth, two and eight. The element is the same on both sides, so the relation is a 合十 of identical phases — a levelling with no internal friction at all. Two consecutive months, two different pairs, one palace. The northwest is the winter's anchor, and the practical instruction follows: put the consequential, authority-level, long-horizon work there in November and December, and expect it to endure rather than to accelerate.
The North in November: A Single Month of Relief
The third November palace is less obvious and more elegant. The north carries the period's Five Yellow and the annual Six White — 土生金, earth generating metal, the configuration that has kept the year's most dangerous star continuously drained and therefore manageable. In November, Four Green arrives and pairs with the annual Six: metal and wood, six and four, a 合十 across a controlling relation.
The reading is a one-month reprieve. The upper two layers of the palace are level with each other, so the Five Yellow underneath stops being provoked. Whatever has been the year's quiet, background worry in the north — a slow structural item, a health question nobody has resolved, a cost that has been tolerated — stops moving in November. It does not disappear. It goes still, and stillness is the first condition of being dealt with.
Note the asymmetry, because it is the practical point: the northwest is balanced for two months and the north for one. Act on the northwest across the winter; act on the north within November. A reprieve that is not used is simply a delay.
The Southwest in December: The Year's Sharpest Palace Levels
And then the result that changes the shape of the year's end. In November the southwest is the chart's primary risk zone: the monthly Five Yellow arrives where the annual Seven Red and the period Six White already sit. In December the Five moves on, Four Green arrives, and it pairs with the period Six White — metal and wood, six and four, ten.
The palace that spent the year as 交劍, the crossed swords, becomes in the final month of the year a balanced palace. 坤 — the mother, the household, the staff, the abdomen — which has been the sector where precision did the most damage, ends the year as the sector where nothing further can be provoked.
Two consequences follow, and the first is a piece of timing that is worth money. The southwest's difficulty is a November difficulty. Work done to soften it before the 7th is not a cure applied to a permanent condition; it is preparation for a December in which the same sector will hold. And the second is about what to do with a levelled palace: do not treat it as an opportunity. A balanced palace is not a green light. It is a place where a thing, once placed, stays where it is put — which makes December the correct month for the household decisions that have been postponed all year, and the wrong month for anything that needs to grow.
The Rule This Produces
Balance in a chart of this type is not a property of a building. It is a schedule. There is one point of it in October, three in November, three in December, and the membership changes — and the practical skill is not to create balance but to know where it currently is and to put the right activity there.
Stated as an instruction: in November, do the authority-level work in the northwest and the deferred worry in the north, and expect both to hold rather than to improve. In December, do the household-level and family-level work in the southwest, where it will finally be stable, and continue the northwest, which is level for a second month. Everything else in those two months takes place in palaces that are committed to a direction and will not be talked out of it.
Ni Haixia: 陰平陽祕, and Why Level Is Not Well
The classical medical canon contains the definition of balance that this whole article has been using, and it is four characters long: 陰平陽祕.
The full line from the Suwen is 陰平陽祕,精神乃治;陰陽離決,精氣乃絕 — when yin is level and yang is contained, the spirit is ordered; when yin and yang separate and part, essence and qi are exhausted. Two words carry the doctrine, and both are mistranslated in almost every popular rendering.
平 does not mean equal. It means level — neither in excess nor deficient, sitting at its proper measure. 祕 does not mean strong. It means contained, sealed, not leaking. So the classical definition of health is not a balance of equal quantities. It is a condition in which each side is at its proper measure and the yang is not escaping. Nine and one are not equal. They are level. That is exactly the arithmetic of 合十, arrived at from a completely different direction, and the convergence is not a coincidence of vocabulary — it is the same idea about what a stable system is.
In the teaching of Ni Haixia (倪海厦), two further emphases give the idea its clinical teeth.
First, the standard of the 平人 is measurable, and it is defined by coupling. The Suwen sets the pulse of the healthy person in breaths: 人一呼脈再動,一吸脈再動,呼吸定息脈五動,閏以太息,命曰平人。平人者,不病也。 — two beats on the exhale, two on the inhale, five to a breath cycle, and that is the 平人; and the 平人 is the one who is not ill. The definition is not "a strong pulse" or "a regular pulse". It is a pulse whose rate is expressed relative to the breath — a ratio between two rhythms. Health is defined as a coupling, and the standard is numerical, which means it can be checked and it can be missed.
The implication for a chart is direct and it is the reason this section belongs in a feng shui Guide. You cannot call a configuration level without a stated standard to be level against. The 平人 is defined against a breath; a palace is defined against the number ten. Both are external references, and both are useless if the practitioner has no baseline recorded. This is why the October review above insists on a September baseline: 平 is a comparison, and a comparison without a record is an opinion.
Second, the yang must have a place. The Suwen says 陽氣者,若天與日,失其所,則折壽而不彰 — the yang qi is like the sky and the sun; when it loses its place, life is shortened and its brightness fails. The word is 所, a place. Fire that is not given a position does not become stronger; it becomes scattered, and the classical description of scattered fire is not heat but failure of brightness.
Read against Period 9 — a fire period, with nine at the centre for twenty years — the sentence is a warning about the whole era rather than about a patient. Nine Purple is the period's ruling star and it is fire. Fire with a place is a hearth, a beacon, a lamp. Fire without one is a wildfire that illuminates nothing because it is everywhere. The work of a fire period is not to add fire. It is to give it 所 — and earth is the only phase that can. Which is why 八白, retired and unglamorous, matters more in the next two months than any star in the chart.
丙子: The Day That Repeats the Year
The day chart does something this article has been building toward, and it does it at three levels at once.
Bing is nine; Zi is one. Yang Fire over the Rat, water beneath the flame — a 合十 written into the day pillar itself. The year's central configuration, period nine against annual one, is repeated at the scale of a single day. What the whole chart of 2026 has been doing at the pivot for twelve months, October 29 does in twenty-four hours.
Bing is the sun, 丙火猛烈,欺霜侮雪, and the day is a 丙 day in a 戊戌 month of a 丙午 year — fire three times over, in the season when fire is finally released from storage. Zi holds 癸 alone, and for Bing that is 正官: the Direct Officer, the constraint that a strong nature accepts because it makes the strength usable. So the day is maximum fire under maximum rule — nine held by one. That is not a contradiction, it is the definition of a hearth.
The phase is 胎, conception. Fire in the stage of conception is a flame not yet lit: complete in potential, unexpressed in fact. Read against the article's thesis, it is the exact image of a level palace — nothing needs to be added, and nothing can yet be shown.
The Na Yin is 澗下水, water in a ravine: contained, continuous, one pitch. It has appeared in this series before, and it earns its repetition here because a ravine stream is the only natural image of water that is both bounded and moving — which is what 陰平陽祕 describes in four characters, and what 合十 describes in two.
The 平 Officer, and the Geometry of the Day
Ping permits 平治道塗, grading roads; 修飾垣牆, repairing walls; 塗泥, plastering; 安碓磑, truing millstones. It prohibits 開市, 上任, 嫁娶, 動土. Every permission is a levelling of an existing surface; every prohibition is an inauguration. The officer and the pillar say the same thing in different languages: level, do not launch.
The geometry adds a constraint that is genuinely useful, because it closes an axis. 子 is the north, and the year's 三煞 falls in the 亥子丑 direction, so the northern sector is doubly closed today. 午 clashes with 子 and the Sha direction is south, so the southern sector is closed as well. Both ends of the north–south axis are shut. What remains available is the east–west axis and the centre: the northeast for planning, the west for writing and negotiation, the southwest for the household, and the pivot for the only balance in the chart.
The remaining relations complete the record: water frame Shen-Zi-Chen; six harmony Zi-Chou; harm Wei (未); punishment Zi-Mao (子卯); destruction You (酉). Void branches Shen and You (申酉) — the 甲戌 decade empties metal, so nothing is cut, terminated or renegotiated today. A metal void on a day whose work is levelling is consistent: you cannot true a surface with a blade.
The Practice: A Review, Then a Handover
- Step I — Record Today's Baseline (卯時, 05:00–07:00). Before reviewing anything, write down the current state of nine things: the nine sectors of the building, one line each, as they are today. Photograph the southwest and the northwest. This document is what makes the review of October 2027 possible, and its absence is what has made this year's review partial.
- Step II — Score October, Palace by Palace (辰時, 07:00–09:00). Use the scorecard above. One verdict per palace: 過, 不及 or 平. Do not correct anything while scoring. The purpose of an audit is to establish what happened, and a correction made during an audit destroys the audit.
- Step III — Find the Repetition (巳時, 09:00–11:00). For every 過 verdict, write the habit that produced it. Under a 伏吟 month the excess is always repetition rather than ambition, so the answer will be a habit and not a decision. One sentence each. This step is the whole value of the review.
- Step IV — Build the November Container (午時, 11:00–13:00). Take the unresolved items from Step II and give each one a container: a date, a document, a location, a person. On a day whose officer forbids 開市 and 上任, this is the correct form of progress — not starting anything, but making a place for what already exists. The centre, the northeast and the west are today's available sectors.
- Step V — Level One Surface (15:00–17:00). Choose one physical surface in the building and flatten it: a desk, a threshold, a floor that catches, a wall that has been repointed badly, a millstone. The Ping instruction is literal, and it is the only instruction in this Guide that can be completed in an afternoon and verified by eye.
Note what is not in the protocol: no purchases, no cures, no new objects. On a day that is simultaneously a 合十 at three scales and a 平 officer, the entire available work is measurement, judgement and levelling. Anything else is an inauguration, and the almanac has closed that door for the day.

The 13% Question: The Five-Million Balance Point
A feng shui practice has a balance point in its tax structure, and unlike the ones above it is measured in money rather than in stars. It is also the largest single decision most small practices make, and most of them make it by accident.
Two regimes. A small-scale taxpayer — 小規模納稅人 — pays VAT at a levy rate of 3%, reduced to 1% under the current concession, and cannot credit input VAT at all. A general taxpayer — 一般納稅人 — pays 6% on modern services and 13% on goods, and does credit its inputs.
The threshold. Registration becomes compulsory when taxable sales exceed 5 million yuan. The test is a rolling twelve-month figure, not a calendar year — a detail that catches practices which grow in the second half and discover in March that they crossed the line in November.
Where the Balance Actually Sits
The comparison that matters is not "1% versus 6%". It is the levy against the net burden, and the net burden depends on the input ratio — the proportion of sales represented by creditable purchases.
At a 1% levy and no credit, the cost is 1% of sales. At 6% with credit, the cost is 6% × (1 − r), where r is the input ratio. The two are equal when r = 83%. Below that ratio the general-taxpayer regime is more expensive, and for a service practice whose costs are mostly salaries, rent and subcontractor labour — all of which either carry no VAT or are not creditable in the same way — the credible input ratio is far below 83%.
At a 3% levy the indifference point is r = 50%, which is more achievable but still high for a practice whose main input is a person's time. The arithmetic explains a fact that is otherwise puzzling: many small practices are financially better off below the line, and the concession makes the line a cliff rather than a slope. Crossing it can raise the effective burden several-fold overnight, which is why firm size in this sector clusters just beneath five million rather than growing smoothly through it.
Why a Practice Might Cross Anyway
Three reasons, and all three are market reasons rather than tax reasons.
The client's credit. A small-scale taxpayer can issue special VAT invoices, but only at 1% or 3%. A corporate client that needs to credit 6% cannot recover the difference, so the practice's effective price to that client is higher than its invoice suggests. For work sold to businesses that deduct input tax, registration is not a cost; it is the price of being sellable.
The rate structure. A registered practice can separate a genuine advisory engagement at 6%, goods at 13% and printed reports at 9% — and after registration the 13% and 9% inputs on those goods and reports become creditable, which improves the input ratio and moves the practice back toward the balance point.
Irreversibility. Reversion to small-scale status is limited and conditional, so the decision is asymmetric: the cost of crossing is immediate and the benefit is a client base that takes time to build. That asymmetry is the real balance-sheet risk, and it is the reason the decision should be planned a year ahead rather than discovered at the threshold.
The Rule
The tax question and the chart question turn out to have the same answer, which is a satisfying place to end. Both are questions about proportion, not about size. A palace is not good because its star is high; it is level because the two numbers sum to ten. A practice is not better because its revenue is larger; it is level because the rate structure matches the input ratio and the client base. And in both cases the failure mode is identical: growing past the balance point without building the container that the new size requires.
October's review found eight palaces repeating. The five-million line is where a practice discovers whether its growth was generation or repetition — and, as with the chart, the answer is decided in the ten days before the turn, not after it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is 合十 and why does it matter more than a "good" star?
A: 合十 is the sum-to-ten relation — 1–9, 2–8, 3–7, 4–6 — read classically as a matched couple. Its function is stabilisation, not growth, and a 合十 pair is not feared even when its elements control each other, because the balance resolves the control. It matters because a palace can be stable without being fortunate, and confusing the two is the commonest error in annual reading.
Q2: Why is 2026 described as "one ten among eight odds"?
A: Because the period centre is nine and the annual centre is one, which sum to ten, while every other palace produces an odd sum — three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen or seventeen. The pivot is balanced and the field is not, which is why the year has felt calm at the centre and turbulent at the edges.
Q3: What was October's 伏吟, in one sentence?
A: The monthly chart was identical to the period chart for the whole Wu Xu month, so every palace held its period star doubled — nine 比和 and no 合十 anywhere except the centre. The signature is repetition without progress: intensity that generates nothing new because generation requires a difference.
Q4: Where is the balance in November and December 2026?
A: It multiplies from one palace to three. In November — centre, northwest and north. In December — centre, southwest and northwest. The northwest is the only palace balanced in both months, by two different pairs, which makes it the winter's anchor; the southwest, the year's sharpest sector, becomes level exactly at year-end.
Q5: Does 陰平陽祕 mean yin and yang should be equal?
A: No. 平 means level — at the proper measure, neither excess nor deficient — and 祕 means contained, not leaking. Nine and one are not equal and they are level. Health, in the classical definition, is proportion plus containment, which is why the definition of the 平人 is given as a measurable ratio — five pulse beats per breath — rather than as a quantity of strength.
Q6: Why is October 29, 2026 unusual?
A: Because three registers agree. The year's centre is a 合十 of nine and one; the day pillar 丙子 is fire over water, nine over one, the same 合十 at the scale of a day; and the officer is 平, the levelling officer. Year, day and officer all say "balance" — and none of them says "improve".
Q7: Where should work be done today?
A: On the east–west axis and at the centre. 子 closes the north through the year's 三煞 in 亥子丑, and the 午 clash with a Sha direction in the south closes that end too, so both ends of the north–south axis are shut. The northeast, the west, the southwest and the pivot remain.
Q8: What is the five-million line?
A: The threshold above which a practice must register as a general taxpayer. Below it, a 1% levy with no input credit; above it, 6% with credit. The two are equivalent only at an input ratio of about 83%, so for a labour-heavy practice the line is a cliff rather than a slope — and crossing it is justified by client credit requirements rather than by the rate comparison.
Q9: What is the single best action today?
A: Record the baseline and level one surface. A review without a recorded baseline is a feeling rather than a finding, and a palace cannot be called level without a standard to be level against. Write down the nine sectors as they are, then flatten one thing that is not flat.
